On September 24, the 7th National Presentation Competition was held at the Times Core headquarters in Seoul. A total of nine groups of junior high school students from across the nation participated in this meaningful event to learn about how to make a presentation. each team had the chance to make a presentation in front of an audience. This month’s topic was “Should Schools Give Students More Freedom?” Under this theme, the nine teams made impressive and unique presentations, expressing their opinions about the strict school regulations on students’ hairstyles and uniforms.

Before the competition started, Times Core Editor-in-chief, Julia Baik (Baik Yoon-jung), gave a lecture on the essential elements and techniques of a good presentation. She started her lecture with a simple question: “What is a presentation?” According to her, a presentation is an interactive communication where a speaker communicates with an audience to deliver a message or convince the audience. 

In order to make a good presentation, you need to know the process of making a presentation. your presentation has to include the three key elements: what, why, and how. The process of preparation is made up of three steps: planning, making, and practice. In the planning process, you have to research and collect data about your topics and analyze your data. In making the process, you have to create strong contents that support your ideas about the topic. Include proper examples and stories, based on logic.

Baik said a good presentation should be interesting and meaningful. “It is almost committing a crime to make your audience bored,” said Baik. “Your presentation has to be interesting and meaningful at the same time. You have to take your audience’s age and gender into consideration to make a good presentation.”

A presentation is comprised of three parts: opening, body, and closing. Your opening is very important because the audience will decide whether or not to listen to your presentation within the first five minutes. Therefore, your opening has to be strong and interesting enough to attract people’s attention.

Then, the main body of your presentation is about “what” and “how.” Make sure to include a climax to make your presentation impressive and unforgettable. It is a good idea to use interesting stories or examples to deliver your messages. Lastly, you have to make an impressive closing, making it linger in your audience’s minds for a while. In order to do it, appeal to the audience’s sensibility, not their reason. Quoting a famous saying is another way of making an impressive ending.

There are a few important things you have to remember when making a presentation. Check your time so you don’t finish your presentation too quickly or too slowly. Your performance is also very important. Preparing all visual data such as pictures, video clips, and graphs is great. However, remember that the most important visual data is YOU! The speaker is the most important element of a presentation. Therefore, when you make a presentation, make sure to dress neatly, act confidently, and speak powerfully. With practice, you will become an excellent public speaker!

At the 7th National English Presentation Competition, each group did a wonderful job. However, the most outstanding group was the Younghoon International Middle School team: Lee Jeong-han, Cho Hyun-suk, Kim Jeong-hoon, and Lee Seon-ha. They made a great presentation with confidence and clarity.  In recognition of their performance, they won the Grand Prize. Congratulations to you all!

9월 24일, 제 7회 프레젠테이션 대회가 서울 타임즈코어 본사에서 열렸다. 전국의 중고등학생들 중 총 9명씩 묶인 그룹들이 프레젠테이션을 하는 방법에 대해 배우기 위해 이 의미 있는 행사에 참가했다. 각 팀은 청중 앞에서 프레젠테이션을 할 기회를 가졌다. 이 달의 주제는 “학교는 학생들에게 더 많은 자유를 주어야 할까?”였다.

이 주제 하에, 9개 팀은 학생들의 머리스타일과 교복과 관련된 엄격한 학칙에 대한 의견들을 말하면서, 인상적이고 독특한 프레젠테이션을 했다.

대회를 시작하기 전에, 타임즈코어 줄리아 백 (백윤정) 편집장은 필수 요소들과 기술들에 대한 강의를 했다. 그녀는 “프레젠테이션을 무엇일까?”라는 간단한 질문으로 강의를 시작했다. 그녀의 말에 따르면, 프레젠테이션은 청중에게 메시지를 전달하거나 혹은 청중을 설득하기 위해 발표자가 청중과 소통하는 상호 의사소통이라고 한다.

좋은 프레젠테이션을 하기 위해, 여러분은 프레젠테이션을 하는 과정을 알 필요가 있다. 너의 프레젠테이션은 중요한 세 가지 요소들을 포함하고 있어야 한다: 무엇을, 왜, 그리고 어떻게. 프레젠테이션 과정은 3단계로 구성된다: 계획, 만들기 그리고 연습. 계획 과정에서, 여러분은 주제에 대한 자료를 모으고 조사하며 자료를 분석한다.

만들기 과정에서, 여러분은 주제에 대한 생각을 지지하는 강력한 자료를 만들어야 한다. 알맞은 사례와 논리에 맞는 이야기를 포함해야 한다.

백 편집장은 훌륭한 프레젠테이션은 흥미롭고 의미 있어야 한다고 말했다. “청중을 지루하게 하는 것은 죄를 범하는 것과 같다,”라고 그녀는 말했다. “여러분의 프레젠테이션은 흥미로운 동시에 의미 심장해야 한다. 여러분은 훌륭한 프레젠테이션을 하려면 청중의 나이와 성별을 고려해야 한다.”

그 다음, 프레젠테이션의 중심부는 “무엇”과 “어떻게”에 대한 내용이다. 반드시 여러분의 프레젠테이션에 인상적이고 잊을 수 없게 만드는 클라이맥스를 포함하도록 해라. 여러분의 메시지를 전하기 위해 흥미로운 이야기 혹은 예를 사용하는 것은 좋은 생각이다. 마지막으로, 여러분은 잠시 동안 청중의 마음에 오래 남을 수 있게 하면서, 인상적인 클로징을 해야 한다. 그것을 하기 위해, 청중의 이성이 아닌 감수성에 호소해라. 유명한 말을 인용하는 것은 인상적인 엔딩을 위한 또 다른 방법이다.

프레젠테이션을 할 때 기억해야 할 중요한 몇 가지가 있다. 프레젠테이션을 너무 빨리 혹은 너무 천천히 끝마치는지 않은지 시간을 체크해라. 여러분의 퍼포먼스 또한 매우 중요하다. 사진, 동영상 그리고 그래프와 같은 모든 시각적 자료를 준비하는 것은 매우 좋다.

그러나, 시각적 자료에서 가장 중요한 것은 바로 여러분 자신이라는 것을 기억해라! 발표자는 프레젠테이션의 가장 중요한 요소이다. 따라서, 프레젠테이션을 할 때, 여러분은 반드시 옷을 단정히 입고, 자신감 있게 행동하며 파워풀하게 말해야 한다. 연습을 하면, 여러분은 뛰어난 대중 연설가가 될 것이다.

제 7회 프레젠테이션 대회에서, 각 그룹은 훌륭히 발표를 해냈다. 하지만, 가장 뛰어난 그룹은 영훈국제중학교팀이었다: 이정한, 조현석, 김정훈 그리고 이선하. 그들은 자신감 있고 명료하게 프레젠테이션을 했다. 그들은 퍼포먼스를 인정받아 대상을 거머쥐었다. 모두 축하해요!
