The nine-day 13th IAAF World Championships ended last week in Daegu. There’s no doubt that the organizing committee highly hoped to advertise the city to the world. Unfortunately, the foreigners who visited the city will most likely return with poor images. Organizers are being criticized for ill-management of the stadium, which was initially built for the 2002 World Cup, and where a highly pricey Mondo track has been installed. The athletic meet of the world’s elite athletes gave a clear view for the upcoming organizing committee for the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Games to note every detail to better prepare for a global event.

The sad reality in the city of Daegu was that not many were truly interested in the event. Technically speaking, countless of citizens were positive about the city being promoted throughout the globe and attracting foreigners into the city.

The thought is highly calculative and it is a logical flow of thinking since global events of any kind does bring in new incomes for the city. Putting the dollars aside, the people of Daegu didn’t have much interest in the sport itself. It was later reported that the organizing committee was fully occupied trying to sell tickets to companies and schools in the region to fill up the stadium. The organizers had to meet the pledged requirement of not leaving any seats empty to the International Association of Athletics Federations국제육상경기연맹.

Global athletes always wish to meet genuine sports spectators instead of half-hearted attendees just taking up space. When Usain Bolt finished his men’s 2-meter final, he went close to the crowd to celebrate his victory. The only cheering fans included presidential contender Park Geun-hye and her political associates. Throughout the nine days, countless of young students filled up the front aisles instead of the seats of the large stadium.

Comparably in the Winter Olympics, Korean spectators filled the seats since there were Korean athletes competing in various events. Consequently the government must invest in new and up-and-coming track stars to attract spectators.

PyeongChang’s organizing crew must put strong emphasis on security measures. Once the games came to an end each day, there was no security in the stadium. Citizens were seen inline-skating on the 1.8 billion won Mondo track. Furthermore, there was poor access between the media and athletes. The event brought hundreds of foreign journalists and photographers. Reporters and cameramen had to take a long walk to reach the athlete zone or the press conference room.

Without a consistent control tower to organize matters, nearly all reporters from the world’s top broadcasting stations, magazines and newspapers had to consistently request for help from the organizing committee. Various social networking sites showed that guests at Daegu felt highly inconvenient with the lack of restaurants, transportation and proper accommodation.

Construction of new venues and facilities are not yet complete in PyeongChang. The organizing team must study and analyze all details from Daegu.
