Whether or not you believe that aliens and UFOs exist, there seems to be a lot of fascination and curiosity about this topic. Popular movies and TV shows such as “The X-Files,” “E.T.,” and “Transformers” have all suggested that aliens and other supernatural beings live among us. On July 14, four Teen reporters and two staff reporters from The Teen Times paid a visit to Children’s Grand Park in Seoul to experience the mysterious exhibition, The Science of Aliens외계과학 at Children’s Hall. The exhibition had five zones about aliens and science, which aroused the reporters’ curiosity. In one zone, we attempted to send messages to aliens. In another, we had to pass through lasers to reach a buzzer. Some of us were scared, but we faced our fears in order to figure out if we are the only living creatures in this huge universe. Let’s find out what the reporters had to say about it.

Have you ever heard about the Roswell UFO incident? In 1947, an odd-looking machine was discovered in Roswell, New Mexico. There were strange-looking figures, about 120 centimeters in length, inside the machine. People thought these figures were aliens, and the machine a UFO. However, some people think that these bodies were actually made by gene manipulation in the Soviet Union. Other people say that they were just experimental models. At the exhibition, I saw a model of the alien that was found inside the UFO. I also saw a video clip of researchers performing a vivisection on the alien. The alien’s eyes were black, and it had twelve fingers and twelve toes. The bodies were taken to the United States military, and the military experimented with these bodies. Is this really proof that aliens exist?

When you hear the word, “alien”, many of you think that this is just an imaginary creature. I also believed that aliens didn’t exist until I visited the England Science Museum. Based on the evidence presented at the museum, I realized that aliens are not just an imaginary creature but an organism that is not scientifically proven. Some of the evidence included a crop circle, UFOs, and witnesses who actually saw an alien. However, the part that surprised me the most was the water bear, a creature that could possibly live in outer space. The reason why I was so fascinated by this creature was because it can survive in any environment. It can live in a very hot or cold climate, an area with high levels of radiation, and it can even survive without oxygen or water! For example, if a water bear lacks water, it goes to sleep in order to save its energy. I also believe that this water bear could live in space, despite the difficult conditions. Visiting the England Science Museum was a great opportunity for me to learn that as modern technology develops, “aliens” and “UFOs” are in the process of getting discovered and could become real. As a result, instead of just arguing that they are all fictional, people should open their minds and consider the different possibilities.

Do you know how wonderful space is? According to scientists, there are trillions of galaxies in the universe, and the galaxies are really beautiful. But so far, Earth is the only planet that supports life. So, are we special? Or are we just one of several million living organisms in space? From this exhibition, I had time to think about these questions. And because I believe that aliens do exist, I didn’t only look from a human’s point of view but I also looked from an extraterrestrial’s point of view. In the exhibition, I was impressed by the idea of sending messages to outer space. Light can travel anywhere. So maybe someday, the UFOs will receive the message and come to Earth. I think it was a brilliant idea. I also had two very different feelings when I first considered the possibility that aliens do exist. First, I felt a bit scared because there is the possibility that extraterrestrials could invade Earth. But I also felt relief because this will prove that we are not the only living creatures in this gigantic universe. I felt very nervous when I sent my message to outer space and after my message was sent successfully, I felt great that maybe someday, an alien might get my message and visit Earth. From this exhibition, I learned that humans are very small compared to the whole universe. I also became convinced that there will be more living things in other galaxies because the universe is huge. What do you think?

I have never given much thought to whether or not aliens exist. To me, they are not important. But when I returned from the alien science museum, I began to think about it. All the evidence and incidents mentioned in the museum made it sound so real and that aliens really do exist. So I asked myself a question. Are they really anticipating the day that they would be able to conquer Earth like in the movies? In movies, you can often see strange creatures from outer space in their huge UFOs, attacking Earth and trying to take over. But maybe that’s all a myth. Maybe that’s something people just believe without any proof. What if they are actually kind-hearted creatures? There are so many questions and mysteries surrounding this topic that I don’t know where to start. I hope one day, all of this will be cleared and we will know whether or not aliens exist. Until then, I guess I should be satisfied with the information I have right now.


우리는 혼자일까?: 외계인에 대한 미스터리 파헤치기

믿거나 말거나 여러분은 외계인과 UFO가 존재하느냐 이 주제에 대해 많은 매력과 호기심이 있는 것 같다. “엑스 파일”, “ET” 그리고 “트랜스포머”와 같은 유명한 영화들과 TV 프로그램들은 모두 외계인과 다른 초자연적 존재가 우리와 같이 살고 있다는 것을 제시했다.

7월 14일, 틴타임즈의 틴리포터 네 명과 기자 두 명은 어린이 홀에서 외계과학이라는 미스터리한 전시회를 경험하기 위해 서울에 있는 어린이 대공원역을 방문했다. 그 전시회는 외계인과 과학에 대해 5구역으로 되어 있는데, 그것은 틴리포터들의 호기심을 불러 일으켰다.

다른 구역에서, 우리는 부저를 누르기 위해 레이저를 통과해야 했다. 우리 중 일부 아이들은 겁먹었지만 우리가 거대한 우주의 유일한 생명체가 아닌지의 여부를 알아내는 것에 대한 두려움과 마주했다. 틴리포터들이 그 전시회에 대해 말한 것을 들어 보자.

로스웰사건에 대해서 들어본 적이 있는가?
1947년, 뉴멕시코 주의 로스웰에서 이상하게 생긴 기계가 발견되었다. 그 기계 안에는 이상한 생김새를 가진 120cm 정도의 사람들이 있었다. 기계 안에 있던 사람들은 외계인으로, 기계는 UFO로 생각했다. 하지만 어떤 사람들은 이 시체들은 소련에서 유전자 조작으로 인해 만들어진 것이라고 주장하고, 다른 사람들은 이것들은 그저 외계인으로 오해 받은 실험용 인체 모형이라고 주장하고 있다.

이 전시회에서, 나는 UFO 안에 있었던 외계인의 모형과 외계인을 생체 해부하는 장면으로 알려져 있는 동영상을 봤다. 외계인의 눈은 까맣고, 12개의 손가락과 12개의 발가락을 가지고 있었다. 시체들은 미국 군대로 이동됐고, 군대에서는 이 시체들로 실험을 했다. 이 사건이 정말 우주에 외계인이 존재하고 있음을 알리는 증거일까?

“외계인”이라는 단어를 들으면 거의 대부분이 그것은 그저 사람들이 만들어낸 상상의 생명이라고 생각할 것이다. 나 역시 외계인들은 터무니 없는 것이라고 생각하였지만, 영국 사이언스 뮤지엄을 갔다오면서 그 생각이 바뀌었다.

박물관에 전시되어있었던 여러 가지의 근거를 살펴보다 보니, 외계인은 상상의 생명이 아닌 아직 과학적으로 증명되지 않은 생명이라는 것을 알게 되었다. 그 몇 가지 근거로, 크롭 서클, UFO와 외계인 목격담이 있었다. 하지만, 내가 제일 놀랐던 부분은 외계에서 살 확률이 높은 생명체인 물곰이었다.

그 이유는 이 조그마한 생명체가 아무리 가혹한 환경에서도 살아남을 수 있다는 점에서였다. 물곰은 엄청 높거나 낮은 온도, 방사능이 강한 곳, 그리고 심지어는 공기나 물이 없는 곳에서까지 살 수 있었다. 예를 들어서, 물곰이 물이 부족하다면, 신체 속 에너지를 아끼기 위해 수면을 취한다.

나는 이 물곰이 아무리 가혹한 환경에서도 살아갈 수 있기 대문에 지구 밖에서 살 수 있는 확률이 아주 높다고 생각한다. 영국 사인어스 뮤지엄을 방문하는 것은, 나에게 현대 기술이 발전하면서 외계인과 UFO는 현재 현실적인 것이 되기 위한 과정을 거치고 있다는 것을 알게 되는 아주 좋은 기회였다. 따라서, 사람들은 그것들이 무조건 거짓이라고 주장하지 말고, 그 근거들은 인정하고 사실에 다가갈 수 있도록 노력해야 한다.

우주가 얼마나 놀라운지 아는가? 과학자들에 의하면 우주에는 수천 억 개의 은하계들이 있고 그것들은 정말 아름답다. 하지만 지금까지는 지구만이 우리가 생명체를 찾을 수 있는 유일한 행성이다. 그렇다면, 우리가 지구에 살게 된 특별한 존재일까? 아니면 그냥 우주 생명체의 일부일 뿐일까? 이 전시회를 통해서, 나는 이런 것들에 대하여 생각할 시간을 가졌다.

나는 외계생명체가 있을 것이라고 믿는 사람들 중 하나이기 때문에 나는 사람의 관점에서만 보지 않고 외계생명체의 관점에도 관심을 가졌다. 전시회에서는 지구 밖에 전파로 메시지를 보내는 아이디어가 맘에 들었다. 빛은 어느 곳에나 갈 수 있다. 어쩌면 언젠가 UFO가 그 메시지를 받고 지구로 올 것이다. 지구 밖에 전파를 보내는 것은 매우 기발한 영감이었다고 생각된다.

나는 또한 만약 외계생명체가 존재한다면 어떻게 될까라고 상상해 보았는데 2가지 느낌이 들었다. 한가지는 외계생명체들이 지구를 공격하러 올까 하는 약간의 두려움을 느꼈다. 다른 하나는 이 크나큰 우주에 우리 말고도 다른 생명체들이 살고 있구나 하는 생각에 안도감을 느꼈다.

나는 우주에 내 메시지를 보낼 때 긴장 되었다. 그래도 내 메시지가 성공적으로 전송이 되었을 때, 나중에 한 외계인이 이것을 보고 지구를 방문하러 올 것이라는 기대감에 기분이 매우 좋아졌다. 그리고 이 전시회로부터 나는 우리 인간이 우주 전체에 비해 너무나도 작다는 것을 알았다. 나는 또 우주가 거대하기 때문에 또 다른 생명체가 살고 있을 거라는 확신을 가지게 되었다. 당신은 어떻게 생각하는가?

나는 외계인이 존재하는 지에 대해 생각해 본적이 없었다. 나에게, 그것은 중요하지 않았다. 하지만 외계 과학전을 보고 돌아왔을 때, 나는 그것에 대해 생각해보기 시작했다. 박물관에서 언급된 모든 증거와 사건들이 너무 진짜 같아서 외계인이 실제로 존재할 수도 있을 것 같았다. 그래서 나는 스스로에게 질문을 던졌다. 외계인들은 영화에서처럼 지구를 정복할 그 날을 예상하고 있을까?

영화에서, 여러분은 종종 거대한 UFO에서 우주에서 온 이상한 생명체들이 지구를 공격하고 탈취하려는 것을 볼 수 있다. 하지만 어쩌면 그것은 모두 근거 없는 믿음이다. 어쩌면 사람들은 어떤 증거도 믿지 않지 않을지도 모른다. 외계인들이 실제로 친절한 마음을 지닌 생명체라면 어떨까?

어디서부터 시작해야 할 지 모르는 너무 많은 질문들과 이 주제를 둘러싼 미스터리가 있다. 나는 어느 날 이 모든 것이 분명해지고 우리가 외계인의 존재 여부를 알게 되기를 바란다. 그 때까지, 나는 내가 지금 내가 가진 정보가 옳다고 만족해야 할 것 같다.
