We can’t deny the importance of English as the world’s one true global language. Therefore, Korean students begin studying English as early as kindergarten. Considering how much money is spent on private English education, it’s not too much to expect students to be fluent enough to speak freely with foreigners without communication problems. However, a more common result is that students struggle to express themselves properly, and even worse, they are afraid of speaking English. My personal opinion is that Korean students think of English as a requirement to pass a test, not as a gateway to better jobs and education. In this article, I will discuss several methods to effectively improve your English language skills while having fun at the same time.

Befriend your foreign teachers.

It’s the best way you can learn English without the bank-breaking tuition fees. You can learn about their culture, customs, and even pick up some common slang words that will never be taught in school. Furthermore, studies show that human-to-human interaction is very important when it comes to learning a language. In short, for students who want to speak English fluently, it’s much better to have actual conversations with foreigners than to just spend time memorizing on your own. I visit my foreign teacher every day during lunch break and cleaning time. I sometimes take my writing with me so that the teacher can critique my work. Most of time, we just have a conversation about our day, and my speaking ability has improved dramatically because of it. Remember: there is no use studying English unless you speak it in front of foreigners. 

Practice English by writing a diary, letters, and academic essays.

Writing is also very important. I think writing is a good way to check your overall English skills because all of your vocabulary and grammar skills go into your writing. The more vocabulary you know and the better grammar skills you have, the better you will be at writing. I fully recommend writing an academic essay with a suitable topic. I think this is one of the reasons I have become pretty good at English. At first, writing something in English was a very tough thing to do. However, I put a lot of effort into making a good essay, and while I was writing, I was able to learn a lot of vocabulary and expressions as I looked for appropriate words and terms. Most importantly, writing an essay helped me develop a creative, analytical, and scientific method of thinking. Also, I would like to recommend writing a letter to somebody you know, such as  pen pals or cousins. I met a foreign teacher at an English camp. She now lives in America. It feels very good to receive a letter all the way from America.

Read English novels or newspapers like The Teen Times rather than Korean-made English textbooks.

In fact, few people probably read English textbooks because they are interesting. We read them because the test will be written in accordance to the textbooks. Instead, I recommend reading English novels that you are interested in. You can read English novels without having to think about the test. If given the chance, it’s a good idea to subscribe to an English newspaper like The Teen Times. It is the best way you can improve your English skills and gain knowledge.

Make your own pocketbook in which you can arrange words, expressions, slangs, etc.

I have my own pocketbook that is filled with useful expressions. Every word I don’t know goes into my pocketbook and I take a look at this whenever possible. Each word should have at least one relative example to recognize the appropriate situation to which you can use it. Here is one tip: when you read a text, make sure you don’t immediately resort to your dictionary when you come across a word you don’t know. If it is a word that you seem to recognize, then check your pocketbook.

Read aloud.

I read English aloud for my pronunciation practice because the better pronunciation, the more confidence I have. If you keep practicing, you will unconsciously get used to English sentence structures and expressions.

Watch movies or TV shows without subtitles.

There are steps you may want to follow when you watch a movie without subtitles. First, listen carefully. Second, watch it again. Third, watch it with English subtitles to check if you heard it right. If possible, you can use Korean subtitles to help you.

Being proficient in English is very difficult. However, we all know that practice makes perfect. There’s no choice but to practice a lot. The most important thing is your passion for learning English. Passion is what has brought me here. So if you practice passionately, someday you will find yourself greatly improved and happy with your English ability!

우리는 세계 공용어로서 영어의 중요성을 부인할 수 없다. 따라서, 한국의 학생들은 빠르면 유치원 때부터 영어를 공부하기 시작한다. 영어 사교육비로 얼마나 많은 돈을 쓰는 지를 생각하면, 외국인과의 의사 소통에서 문제없이 자유롭게 말할 정도로 유창할 것으로 기대할 수 밖에 없다.

하지만, 좀 현실적인 결과는 학생들이 스스로 적당히 표현하려고 애쓰는 정도다. 안 좋게 보면, 그들은 영어로 말하는 것을 두려워한다. 나의 개인적인 소견은 한국 학생들은 영어를 좀 더 나은 직업과 교육의 등용문이 아니라, 시험에 통과하기 위한 요건으로 생각한다.

원어민 선생님과 친구가 되라.

영어를 유창하게 하는 것은 매우 힘들다. 하지만 우리 모두는 완벽하게 연습해야 한다는 것을 알고 있다. 연습하는 것 말고는 다른 방법이 없다. 가장 중요한 것은 영어를 배우는 데에 있어 여러분의 열정이다. 열정은 내게서 나오는 것이다. 그렇다면 만약 여러분이 열정적으로 연습한다면, 언젠가 여러분은 영어 실력이 상당히 향상되었다는 것을 알고 행복해 할 것이다!
