The common visitor would most likely prioritize the famous sights and taste the unique delicacies of a new place. However, there are times when an accidental detour has more pull towards a great meal to be discovered behind a tucked away corner. As a resident of Busan, I would often look up at the buildings in the hills around the periphery of the city, and it impressed upon me an appreciation for the traditional Korean vernacular. The sight also aroused my curiosity about the alleys hidden among these houses.

These temporary make-shift residences that were once set up by refugees from the Korean War, grew organically into residential clusters that have survived throughout the decades. The natural geographical characteristics of Busan, with its numerous arching hills, led to a unique arrangement of houses built into the hillsides with deeper alleys compared to those seen in any other region. Busan is a city of alleyways that present footprints of historical life and the quiet charms of the forgotten days. Recently, these alleys, full of nostalgic remnants, have become popular destinations for those who wish to slow down and take a break from the chaotic pace of the urban city.

I made a visit to the cultural Villages, and unlike the constant modernization of downtown Busan, they have preserved the old ways and steered clear from the waves of change that swept through the rest of the city. These humble villages are being revived, not through reconstructions and renovations, but through colorful murals. There has been tremendous effort by residents, students, artists, and volunteers to revive the alleys with beautiful murals and sculptures. The Taegeuk Village of Gamcheon-dong and the Anchang Village of Beomil-dong are the most well-known cultural Villages in Busan.

With its beautiful scenery, Taegeuk Village is often praised as the Korean Santorini. Dark shades of cubicle houses are stacked on top of one another along the elevated streets, adorned with colorful yellow, pink, or blue tiles on the roof. The subtle beauty of harmony in square and circular shapes is the reason why this place is called the Santorini or Machu Picchu of Busan. Situated on the waist of the hill, alleys here tend to be steep with endless stairs. Just a short walk up the alley might be enough for most to break out in a sweat. The maze-like entanglement of winding streets could easily confuse any newcomer. In truth, we were walking astray when we stumbled upon these alleys that have ample space for maybe one person to walk through at a time.

Perhaps because of the recent media attention, there have been more foreign visitors wandering the alleys and climbing up its stairs, toting cameras in hand. The residents frown upon the intrusion into their modest way of life. They seem to grumble, “What do you know about life here?” An aged senior citizen passing us by, muttered, “Why do people keep coming, thinking that there is something worth taking pictures of?” I could sympathize with the sentiments of the older residents. It would be difficult to offer sincerity to people who are making a spectacle out of their less affluent circumstances. Nonetheless, I managed to have a conversation with one of the elder residents. “It’s a poor village, but a lot of young people come and seek us out these days. They take pictures and hold small talks with all of us seniors,” said Kim Hae-sun (74), who was enjoying the warm spring sunshine while admiring the picturesque view of Gamcheon port below. 

The cultural Villages were built in a compacted environment and often the houses are connected together where neighbors can see into one other’s houses, but they seem to embrace one another as part of a community. And I could sense warm winds of change for the outside visitor through the vibrant colored murals, appealing signposts, and inviting sculptures which have multiplied on different alley corners in recent years. Although the alleys are quite narrow, requiring some maneuvering when two people try to walk through, I was pleasantly surprised to find a fascinating and unexpected world on the way home.

부산 문화 마을의 골목길

보통의 방문객은 가장 유명한 광경을 보는 것에 우선 순위를 두고 새로운 장소의 독특한 별미를 맛볼 것이다. 하지만, 사람들이 붐비지 않은 곳에 위치한 모퉁이 뒤에 발견될 만한 멋진 저녁을 향해 있던 돌발적인 우회로가 더 이끌렸다. 부산 주민으로서, 나는 도시 주변의 언덕에 있는 빌딩에서 종종 올려다 보곤 했었고 전통적인 한국의 일반 주택에 감탄했다. 그 곳을 바라보니 이러한 집들 사이에 숨겨진 골목길들에 대해 내 호기심을 자극했다.

한때 한국 전쟁의 난민들에 의해 세워진 임시 변통의 주택들은 몇 십 년을 거쳐 존속해 온 주택촌으로 조직적으로 발전했다. 수많은 아치형 언덕은 물론, 부산의 자연 발생적인 지리적 특성 은 어떤 다른 지역에서 보던 것들에 비해 좀 더 깊숙한 골목길과 비탈로 지어진 집들의 독특한 배열로 이어졌다.

부산은 역사적인 날의 발자취와 잊혀진 날들의 상당히 매력적인 요소들을 나타내는 좁은 길의 도시이다. 최근, 향수의 잔상으로 가득한 이러한 골목길이 도시의 혼돈 상태인 속도로부터 여유를 찾고 휴식을 취하고 싶은 사람들에게 인기 있는 목적지가 되었다.

나는 문화 마을을 방문했고 부산의 변함없는 현대화와는 달리, 그 곳은 오래된 것들이 보존되어 있고 그 도시 주변을 통해 휩쓸린 급속한 변화로부터 명확히 나아갔다. 이러한 작은 마을들은 재건과 혁신을 통해서가 아닌 알록달록한 벽화를 통해 소생되었다. 주민, 학생, 예술가 그리고 자원 봉사자의 엄청난 노력이 아름다운 벽화와 조각품들과 함께 골목길들을 부활하게 했다. 감천동의 태극 마을과 범일동의 안창 마을은 부산에서 가장 유명한 문화 마을이다.

아름다운 광경과 더불어, 태극 마을은 종종 한국의 산토리니로 칭송 받는다. 좁은 방으로 된 집들의 어두운 음영은 지붕에 다채로운 노란색, 분홍색 혹은 파란색 타일로 꾸며진 고가 도로를 따라 차곡차곡 포개져 있다. 직각과 원형 모양으로 절묘한 조화는 이 장소가 산토리니 혹은 마추픽추라고 불리는 이유이다. 언덕의 산허리에 위치한 골목은 끝없는 계단으로 가파른 경향이 있다.

골목길을 잠깐만 걸어도 흠뻑 땀이 젖을지도 모른다. 미로 같은 얽혀 있는 구불구불한 거리는 어떤 낯선 사람에게도 쉽게 혼동될 만하다. 사실, 우리는 어쩌면 한 사람이 걸어갈 만한 충분한 공간이 있던 골목길을 우연히 발견했을 때 길을 잃을지도 모른다.

어쩌면 최근 매체의 관심 때문인지 직접 카메라를 들고 다니며, 골목길을 배회하고 계단을 오르는 외국인 관광객들이 많아졌다. 주민들은 그들의 수수한 삶 속으로 침범한 것에 눈살을 찌푸렸다. 그들은 “여러분은 이 곳의 삶에 대해 무엇을 알고 있나요?”라고 투덜거리는 것처럼 보인다. 노인들이 지나갈 때 중얼거린다, “왜 사람들은 사진을 찍을 가치가 있는 것이 있다고 생각하고 오는 것일까?” 나는 그 곳에 사는 노인들의 정서에 공감할 수 있었다. 덜 부유한 환경 속에 광경을 만들고 있는 사람들에게 정직함을 제공하기란 힘들 것이다.

그럼에도 불구하고, 나는 노인들 중 한 분과 대화를 하는 데 성공했다. “이곳은 가난한 마을이지만, 요즘 많은 젊은이들이 와서 우리를 찾고 있다. 그들은 사진을 찍자고 부탁하고 여기 모든 노인들과 짧지만 대화를 나눈다,”라고 감천 항구 아래의 그림 같은 광경에 감탄하면서 따뜻한 봄 햇살을 즐기고 계시던, 김해순 할머니께서 말씀하셨다.

문화 마을은 빽빽한 환경으로 지어졌고 주택들은 종종 함께 연결된다. 그 곳은 이웃들이 서로의 집을 볼 수 있지만 공동체의 일부로 서로를 보듬는 것처럼 보인다. 그리고 최근 몇 년간 다양한 골목길 모퉁이에서 늘어난 흥미로운 이정표와 매력적인 조각품, 활기찬 형형색색의 벽화를 통해 타지 방문객에게 훈훈한 변화의 바람을 느낄 수 있을 수 있다.

비록 골목길이 상당히 좁긴 하지만, 두 사람이 양보해서 걸을 수 있을 때 어떤 교묘함을 요구하면서, 나는 집으로 가는 도중에 대단히 흥미롭고 예기치 못한 세계에 기분 좋은 놀라움을 감출 수 없었다.
