At one point in Korean history not long ago, Daegu had a distinctive image as the manufacturing and commercial center of the nation’s southeastern region. Now that image has been faded completely. It was back in 1993 when the Gross Regional Domestic Product struck the lowest among the seven major cities in the nation.  

Boom towns such as Incheon that houses on of the largest and busiest international airports in the world, and the Incheon Free Economic Zone pretty much placed Daegu last on the list. Now desperate for revival of its economy, Daegu has plans to build a new international airport in the adjacent town of Miryang.

The project which will encompass the Dongnam region, covering Busan, Ulsan and Daegu is the key campaign pledge for its provincial government. According to Daegu officials, the new Dongnam Airport will be a resolution to the severe inconvenience and socio-economic losses occurring in the area from an absence of an international airport. Currently Daegu’s 2.5 million people are supporting Miryang which is in competition for the international airport with Busan, the nation’s largest port city. According to The Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritimes Affairs국토해양부, the final decision will be announced in March.

The city of Daegu is indeed on its path to rediscovering itself. The city is devoted to branding itself as a good place to do business and to host large-scale international events. Although the race to become an international airport region is unsure at this point, the city also has plans and measures to increase its GRDP and economic growth. Fundamental solutions for sustained prosperity are necessary and Daegu and adjacent areas in North Gyeonsang Province, or Gyongbuk, are doing just that by establishing themselves in the Gyeongbuk Free Economic Zone where a cluster of knowledge-based industries and research centers have positioned themselves. The new free economic zone seeks to attract medical, educational and cultural service providers as well as high-tech manufacturers and researchers from in and outside Korea.

Just as people automatically equate New York as a global finance center, recognize San Francisco for its Silicon Valley, and envision Paris as a fashion central, it is highly possible that with continuous efforts Daegu may one day hold a global name as a knowledge-based industrial center. By all means the city is slowly making its mark on the global map. Prepared for mega international events, Daegu has brought the 13th IAAF World Championships in Athletics. Coinciding with the global campaign of Visit Daegu Year 2011, the global sporting event will be staged at the Daegu Stadium from August 27 through September 4.

Through future global events officials of the city say Daegu will soon receive the deserved recognition to surpass past host cities such as Berlin, Paris and Osaka. A foreigner-only casino and a new duty-free shop will be opened this month in the city. With extensive travel promotions to attract foreign visitors, the city wishes to be turned into a tourist destination and build new tourism infrastructures.

세계 지도에 대구 광역시 배치?

부산, 울산 그리고 대구 즉 동남 지역을 포함하는 그 프로젝트는 도청의 핵심적 선거 공약이다. 대구 관계자들에 따르면, 그 새로운 동남 공항은 국제 공항이 없음으로 인해 그 지역에 일어나고 있는 심각한 불편과 사회 경제적 손실의 해결책이 될 것이다. 현재 대구의 2백 5십만 명의 사람들은 한국의 가장 큰 항구 도시인, 부산과 국제 공항에 관한 경쟁을 펼치고 있는 밀양을 지지하고 있다. 국토해양부에 따르면, 최종 결정은 3월에 발표될 예정이다.

사실상 대구는 스스로 재발견하는 길을 걷고 있다. 그 도시는 사업을 하고 엄청난 규모의 국제 행사를 주최할 좋은 장소로 스스로 브랜드화 하는 데 모든 것을 쏟고 있다. 비록 이 시점에서는 국제 공항이 되기 위한 그 경쟁이 불분명하지만, 대구는 GRDP와 경제 성장을 높이기 위한 계획과 대책을 갖고 있다. 지속적인 번영을 위한 근본적인 해결책이 필요하고 대구와 경상북도의 가까운 지역들은 지식 기반 산업과 연구 센터를 직접 둘 만한 경북 경제 자유 구역을 둠으로써 잘 해나가고 있다. 새로운 경제 자유 구역은 한국 안팎에서 첨단 기술 제조업과 연구원들뿐만 아니라 의료, 교육 그리고 문화 서비스 제공 기관들을 끌어 모으려고 하고 있다.

사람들이 자동적으로 뉴욕을 세계 금융 센터와 동일시하는 것처럼, 샌프란시스코가 실리콘 밸리로 인정 받는 것처럼, 그리고 파리가 패션의 중심지로 그려지는 것처럼, 지속적인 노력으로 어느 날 대구가 지식 기반 산업 센터로 세계적인 이름을 떨칠 지 그 가능성은 꽤 높다. 초대형 국제 행사를 준비하고 있는 대구는 제 13회 IAAF 세계 육상 선수권 대구 대회를 따냈다. 2011 대구 방문의 해에 같이 개최되는, 그 세계적인 스포츠 행사는 8월 27일부터 9월 4일에 대구에서 선보이게 될 것이다.

대구 미래의 세계적 행사 관계자들에 따르면 대구가 곧 베를린, 파리 그리고 오사카와 같은 지난 주최국들을 능가할 만한 인정을 받을 것이라고 말한다. 이번 달에 대구에서 외국인만 허용되는 카지노와 새로운 면세점이 개장될 것이다. 외국인 방문객들을 끌어오기 위해 광범위한 여행 홍보 활동으로, 대구가 관광지가 되고 새로운 관광 공공 기반 시설을 만들기를 바란다.
