The final installments of the hugely popular Harry Potter film franchise have got millions around the world overjoyed at the prospect of the much loved saga reaching its conclusion. Based on the bestselling novels by J.K. Rowling, the boy wizard has captivated audiences around the globe via the silver screen.

As a result, many fans enjoy playing out elements of the books and films, such as acting out the story lines and imagining they are wizards too. However, the fictional game Quidditch from the stories has become a real life success, with teams of college students running around while holding onto broomsticks. So, what’s it all about?

College campuses in the U.S. are usually home to more traditional team sports, such as football or basketball. However, increasingly they are becoming venues for games of Quidditch. What’s more, there is a growing number of players engaging in this magical sport around the world, despite the fact that in the books and films the game is played while flying around on broomsticks. Quidditch is the wizard’s equivalent of soccer or baseball, which Harry Potter and his friends play at their school.

In the fictional Harry Potter universe there is even a Quidditch world cup! For children brought up on the Harry Potter series Quidditch is just as exciting as more conventional “human” sports.

The game was first played in the human world in 2005 when a student named Xander Manshel from Middlebury College in the U.S. state of Vermont, joined with a group of students who were prepared to give it a try. Things have grown exponentially from there. The rules attempt to stick closely to the game as it is played in the books. First off, there are two teams, each with seven players.

Of those seven players, three are designated as ‘chasers’ who attempt to score by throwing a ball through one of the opposite team’s three goals. Two more players are known as ‘beaters’ and throw balls at the opposing team to stop them from scoring. Of the final two players one is a ‘keeper,’ who guards the goals, and the other is a ‘seeker’, who has to catch the golden ‘snitch’, a flying golden ball which instantly ends the game if caught. In the human version of the game players have to constantly hold onto broomsticks as they run around, while the snitch is represented by a cross country runner dressed in yellow.

However ridiculous it may sound, Quidditch players are keen to maintain the validity of their sport. “A Quidditch game might look crazy to somebody who’s never seen it before, but a basketball game might look crazy to an external observer watching it for the first time,” said a Quidditch player from George Washington University in Washington DC.
