The Korean idol group, JYJ, recently put on an eagerly anticipated concert at the Olympic Main Stadium in Seoul. JYJ, which consists of former members of the superstar group TVXQ, sought to connect with their fans through the concert. However, delays and cut corners meant that the finished product wasn’t nearly as impressive as it should have been. While JYJ certainly have the sound, the look and the moves, it seems they need to learn a thing or two about professionalism.

For the diehard fans of JYJ, the ‘Worldwide Concert in Seoul’ presented a unique opportunity to see Yu-chun, Jae-joong and Jun-su rock the stage in person. Without hesitation, countless fans purchased tickets that ranged from W110, 000 to W198, 000 (on average at least W30,000 more than tickets for other concerts held at the same venue), assured that their money would be well spent on the elaborate stage design and a cover for the stadium’s open roof.

Yet while the JYJ trio had sent waves through the music world for their departure from their old band, the Seoul stadium show sent waves of a different kind. Due to the freezing weather the original plan to cover the top of the stadium with a dome was abandoned, leaving fans to face the elements in an arena that was already icy at 7:00 p.m. While this could have been excused, as neither the group nor their management could control the weather, a one hour delay literally left fans out in the cold. At 7:20 p.m. the trio took to the stage to thank their fans for coming and to pay tribute to those killed in the Yeonpyeong Island incident, yet they departed as suddenly as they had arrived and left their fans waiting for another 40 minutes.

The show eventually kicked off just after 8:00 p.m. and the audience soon forgot about the subzero temperatures as the group performed tracks from their first album, The Beginning. The three band members where evidently suffering from the biting cold as well, but nevertheless jumped straight into their dance routines, running around the stage and giving their best to their adoring fans. In addition to going through their repertoire of fan favorites the group unveiled some brand new tracks for their audience. An undeniable highlight was the ‘Be My Girl Remix’ which saw fans mirroring the group’s dance moves after studying the choreography from a video Yu-chun recently tweeted.

Having worked their way through no less than 18 songs the group thanked their fans and left the stage, yet failed to come back for an encore despite fans screaming their names afterwards. While the group pleased their fans after a less than satisfactory start, the abrupt end hammered home the fact that JYJ need to learn a little more about concert etiquette. Without a doubt they have all the raw talent, yet to become true superstars they need to start treating their fans like legendary icons such as Lee Hyori do. Let’s hope JYJ learn their lesson and live up to expectations next time. 

JYJ는 더 잘 할 수 있었다

한국의 아이돌 그룹인 JYJ는 최근 서울의 올림픽 경기장에서 큰 기대를 불러모은 콘서트를 무대에 올렸다. 슈퍼스타 그룹인 전 동방신기의 멤버들로 구성된 JYJ는 콘서트를 통해 그들의 팬들과 소통했다. 그러나, 콘서트가 지연되고 여러 절차가 생략되어 기대만큼 인상적이지는 않았다. JYJ는 확실히 음악, 외모 그리고 안무를 갖추었지만, 그들은 전문성에 대해 배워야 할 것이 필요해 보였다.

완고한 JYJ팬들에게, 서울에서의 콘서트는 유천, 재중 그리고 준수를 무대에서 직접 볼 기회를 주었다. 주저함 없이, 수 많은 팬들은 11만원에서 19만8천원에 달하는 티켓을 구입했다 (평균적으로 적어도 같은 장소에서 열리는 다른 공연들에 비해 3만원이 비싸다), (팬들은) 그 돈들은 멋진 무대 디자인과 경기장의 지붕에 잘 쓰여질 것이라 확신했다.

그러나 3인조 JYJ는 동방신기 때부터 그들의 음악 세계를 선보였는데 이번 서울 스테디엄의 것은 다른 종류의 것이었다. 어는 듯 추운 날씨로, 저녁 7시에 이미 추워져 경기장을 돔으로 덮으려는 원래의 계획은 무산됐다. 이것은 이해될 수 있다고 하더라도, JYJ나 메니지먼트사도 날씨를 조절할 수 없었다. 한 시간의 연기는 정말로 팬들을 추위 속에 떨게 했다. 7시 20분에 JYJ는 콘서트에 와준 팬들에게 감사하며 연평도 사고로 희생된 분들에게 경의를 표하며 무대에 나타났지만, 그들은 도착하자마자 40분을 기다린 팬들을 남겨두고 떠났다.

쇼는 결국 8시 이후에 시작했고 그들이 첫 앨범인 The Beginning으로 시작하자 관중들은 영하의 추운 날씨도 금새 잊어버렸다. 세 명의 멤버들은 확실히 추운 날씨로 고생을 했지만 무대 위를 누비며 환호하는 팬들에게 그들의 최선을 다 하며 곧 댄스를 시작했다. 팬들이 가장 좋아하는 곡뿐 아니라 팬들을 위해 새로운 노래도 선보였다. 부인할 수 없는 최고의 하이라이트는 유천이 최근 트위터에 올린 안무를 연구해 그들의 춤을 따라하는 팬들을 보여주는 ‘Be My Girl Remix’였다.

자그마치 18곡의 노래를 하며 JYJ는 팬들에게 감사하며 무대를 떠났지만 이후에도 그들의 이름을 외치는 팬들에도 불구하고 앵콜을 부르기 위해 돌아오지는 않았다. 다소 만족스럽지 못한 시작을 했지만 그들은 그 후 팬들을 즐겁게 해주었지만, 갑작스럽게 끝을 냄으로써 JYJ는 콘서트 에티켓에 대해 더 배울 것이 있다는 것을 보여주었다. 의심의 여지 없이 그들은 재능을 가지고 있지만, 진정한 슈퍼스타가 되기 위해서 그들은 그들의 팬들은 전설적인 아이콘은 이효리와 같이 대하기 위해 훈련이 필요하다. JYJ가 잘 배워서 다음에는 기대에 부응하기를 바란다.
