Let’s rewind the clock back to when you took great joy in playing with toys. As childish as it may seem, the innocence was there. You shared your every emotion with them and held them tight when going to bed. The truth is, no one, I mean no one, believed there would be a point in life when we would say farewell to our dear toys. Time was never a question when we were kids. However, the reality is as we grow older so does our interest in other things in life. So, where does that leave our toy friends? This is the dilemma Woody and his crew face in Toy Story 3, which is scheduled to hit local theaters on August 5.

Toy Story 3, produced by Pixar Animation Studios, has not yet touched down on Korean soil but it has drawn a huge number of moviegoers to theaters in North America. With a positive buzz surrounding the film, it has topped the box office for the first two weeks since it was released in the U.S.

Ever since the franchise was released it has been followed by superlative modifiers; the first Toy Story was the ‘first’ animated film that fully adapted computer graphic techniques and the final installment is no exception; it is the most successful and topmost-grossing film in Pixar’s history. Its revenue outpaced the previous top-grossing film, Finding Nemo (2003) of $339 million, earning $340 million as of July 11. We can just imagine the kind of earnings it is expected to make once the credits are rolling in Asian countries.

What’s interesting to notice here is that Woody and Buzz are indeed a tad old. It was in 1995 when the first installment was released. So, teenagers from the 90s are now well into their twenties. But when it comes to fun, age doesn’t mean a thing. While attending the grand premiere of the film in Korea, I was highly intrigued by Woody and his dozens of friends - space ranger Buzz Lightyear, cowgirl Jessie, Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head and Slinky Dog.

Woody and his friends set up a scheme to win back Andy’s attention and affection, but Andy is not a kid who spends his time with toys any more. After those 10 years, the owner of the toys is all grown up and becomes a college student. Before leaving home for a college, Andy is put in a sticky situation; how would Andy deal with his toys? Which ones are left in the dark and musty attic? Which one is heading for college with Andy?

One thing leads to another and all the toys end up in a daycare center. At first when Woody’s crew are escorted by Lotso Bear, who presides over the toys in the daycare center, it seems the perfect place where there are no worries about getting abandoned because new kids come every year. Unfortunately, it didn’t take long for them to realize that the daycare center is not where they are supposed to belong. This is where the great exodus from the daycare center starts.

On the surface the film seems fun, amusing and colorful but it has somewhat of a profound theme underneath. It makes the audience think about the value of their existence. What if there was no one who needed you? Would you sit back and do nothing? Or would you give it a try and find someone or somewhere else suitable for you?

The writer and director aimed to deliver this message in a not-so-heavy fashion through Toy Story 3. “The movie delivers heavy and serious themes, which is to say, everyone goes through changes in their lives and they need to face and admit it. So we tried to even out the heavy theme with humor.” said Darla K. Anderson, the producer of the film.

Here’s one more thing to note. A lot of famous Hollywood actors and actresses have taken up voice acting, most of whom had partaken in the previous two films; Tom Hanks dubbed his voice for Woody, Tim Allen for Buzz Lightyear and Joan Cusack for Jessie. And notable American actress Woopi Goldberg recently joined as a purple octopus named Stretch, one of the Lotso Bear’s henchmen in the daycare center.

Toy Story 3 is a feast for the eyes and the mind. Watching the risky and brave adventures of the toys in 3D will please your eyes. It will also make both you and your parents reminisce about the good old days.
