So what went wrong? The Red Devils had all the confidence, all the power, all the momentum, Yet none of it worked against the South Americans. Yet it had nothing to do with ability; rather it came down to pressure.

You will find European clubs such as Liverpool, Manchester City, Real Madrid, Barcelona, teams that all compete in the European league. It is simply that for the most part Argentina’s players are in a higher stakes, win or die environment. The European leagues are notoriously competitive, where global stars are made. A player within that environment has to learn to play soccer in a very different way just to survive each match. They need to know how to apply pressure and withstand it.

If we look at the victory over the Greek team we find their roster also holds a large number of players who play for domestic Greek teams. Somewhat like the Korean soccer league, the Greek league is not comparable to the Spanish and English leagues. This may explain why Park Ji-sung led the Red Devils to an easy victory in that first game.

The fact that the Korean national squad holds players that play for foreign teams is a testament to the growth of Korean soccer in recent years. However, unless more players get the chance to play in foreign leagues, the nation’s team holds little hope of advancing to the point where they can challenge some of the true heavy weights of international football. Until that point the Red Devils will always be at a disadvantage.
