We are almost one week into the 2010 World Cup and already this has proved to be a tournament worth remembering; the epic victory of the Red Devils, tears of joy and sorrow from fans all over the world and the spread of World Cup fever. Yet unlike other World Cups in recent memory this year’s event has been a gamble given that the host nation of South Africa has had a deeply troubled past. The question is, will the gamble pay off?

So far the tournament has been regarded as a success by South Africa. Some of the best soccer players from all over the globe have travelled to the tournament, as have hundreds of thousands of supporters. Meanwhile all over the world millions of fans have been watching the games on screens both large and small.

In terms of the actual soccer matches the game between South Korea and Greece was undoubtedly a highlight, with the two impressive goals by Lee Jung Soo and Park Ji Sung giving the Reds a 2-0 victory over the Greek team. Yet the same day people on the other side of the planet also couldn’t take their eyes off the screen due to the England vs. USA match, which ended in a 1-1 draw after the English keeper let in a shot he easily could have saved.

Already this is turning out to be an exciting tournament with many unexpected turns and of course it has providing a major boost to South Africa. Before the tournament had even started $ 3 billion was invested. Yet all the while mistakes and accidents have been surrounding the tournament and spoiling the nation’s image.

Even before the first game had taken place visitors from China, Greece, Portugal, Spain, Japan, Colombia and Korea had become the victims of street crime. Meanwhile before their match against Korea the Greek team had a large amount of money stolen from their hotel room. Then there was the problem of stadium workers protesting over their low pay. Finally while millions have been watching at home the amount of empty seats at the matches has left a bad impression, with many wondering why ticket prices weren’t lowered for poorer African soccer fans.

South Africa’s government has accused the foreign press of over criticizing the World Cup and trying to make their nation’s big moment fail, yet on the other hand this World Cup has undeniably had many negatives along with its positives. What remains to be seen is if the gamble will pay off and whether this will be remembered as one of the best World Cups or as one of the worst.

현재까지 그 경기는 남아공의 성공으로 간주되어 왔다. 전 세계 최고의 축구 선수들 중 일부는 수많은 후원자들을 데리고 다니면서, 그 경기를 위해 이동했다. 그 동안 전 세계의 수백만 명의 팬들은 크고 작은 스크린으로 경기를 시청해 왔다.

한국과 그리스 간의 실제 경기에 대해 그리스 팀과의 대결에서 2대 0으로 붉은 악마에게 승리를 선물한 이정수와 박지성에 의한 인상적인 두 골은 물론, 당연히 주목을 받았다. 하지만 그 날 지구의 반대편에 있는 사람들 또한 영국과 미국의 경기 때문에 화면에 눈을 뗄 수 없었다. 그 경기는 영국의 골키퍼가 쉽게 막을 수 있는 골을 허용한 후 1대 1 동점으로 끝이 났다.

이미 많은 예기치 못한 변화로 경기가 흥분하고 있음이 판명되고 있고 물론 남아공에 주된 선전이 보여지고 있다. 경기가 시작되기도 전에 30억 달러가 투자되었다. 하지만 그 동안의 실수와 사고가 그 경기를 에워싸고 있고 그 국가의 이미지를 손상시켜 왔다.

첫 경기가 시작되기 전에는 중국, 그리스, 포르투갈, 스페인, 일본, 콜롬비아 그리고 한국에서 온 방문객들은 길거리 범죄의 희생양이 되어 왔다. 그 동안에 한국과의 경기 전 그리스팀은 호텔 방에서 어마어마한 돈을 잃어버렸다. 낮은 봉급에 저항하는 경기장 근무자들의 문제도 있었다. 결국 수백만 명이 그 경기장의 빈 좌석들을 집에서 봤을 때 티켓 가격이 가난한 아프리카 축구 팬들을 위해 왜 낮춰지지 않았는지 의아해하며, 좋지 않은 인상을 남겼다.

남아공 정부는 자국의 월드컵에 불만이 많고 남아공의 중요한 순간을 망치려고 하는 외국 기자들을 비난했다, 하지만 반면 이번 월드컵은 명백히 긍정적인 면과 더불어 많은 부정적인 면을 띠었다. 계속 지켜봐야 할 점은 그 도박의 성공 여부이고 최고의 월드컵들 중 하나로 혹은 최악의 월드컵들 중 하나로 기억될 지의 여부이다.
