According to researchers at the Nanjing Agricultural University, giant pandas make a very powerful antibiotic compound in their blood. It is thought that the pandas make the antibiotic to protect themselves from infections in the wild.

The compound, which is called Cathelicidin-AM is so powerful it takes less than an hour to kill bacteria. Most antibiotics that are used by health professionals today take six hours to do the same job.

Luckily for the giant pandas, the antibiotic found in their blood can be made artificially in a laboratory. Researchers are hoping to use it to make powerful antiseptics or antibiotics that can fight superbugs.

Giant pandas are a rare species of bears that are found only in China. According to the World Wildlife Fund, as of 2004, there were only 1,600 giant pandas left in the world. The giant pandas are an endangered species and even with the help of conservationists increasing their population has been an uphill battle.

난경농업대학 연구원들에 의하면 팬더 혈액에는 강력한 항생제 복합체가 있다. 야생에서 사는 팬더들의 몸에서는 온각 전염병에 걸리지 않게 위해 혈액에서 항생제가 만들어지는 것으로 보고 있다.

카텔리시딘-AM으로 알려진 이 복합체는 매우 강력하여 박테리아를 파괴시키는 데에 한 시간도 걸리지 않는다. 대부분 의학 전문가들이 사용하는 항생제는 같은 박테리아를 파괴시키는 데에 6시간이 걸린다.

다행히, 이 항생제는 연구실에서 인공적으로 만들 수 있다. 연구원들은 복합체를 사용하여 소독제나 슈퍼버그를 파괴시킬 수 있는 항생제를 만들겠다고 했다.

팬더는 중국에서만 서식하는 매우 희귀한 동물이다. 세계야생생명기금에 의하면 2004년 기준으로 전세계에 1600마리의 팬더가 있다고 한다. 팬더는 환경 보호 활동가들의 도움을 받음에도 불구하고 멸종 위기에 처한 동물이다.
