Every year, Discovery Education, a digital content provider and 3M hold a science competition. Budding scientists are asked to come up with new and creative solutions to everyday problems. The winner not only gets the honor of receiving the title of “America’s Top Young Scientist”, but also receives a cash prize of USD 25,000.

This year, first place went to 14-year-old Deepika Kurup who invented a water purifying technology. Lack of access to clean water is a growing problem around the world. According to the World Health Organization, 1.1 billion people do not have access to clean water. Kurup’s invention uses energy from the sun to disinfect unclean water and is not only cost effective, it is also environmentally friendly.

Second and fourth place also went to two female students. Second place went to Carolyn Jons who invented a new type of packaging that keeps food fresh for longer and fourth place went to Anishaa Sivakumar whose invention aims to help patients with an eye disease that leads to blindness.

디지털 콘텐츠를 제공하는 디스커버리 에듀케이션과 3M은 매년 과학 경시대회를 주최한다. 일상생활에서 겪는 문제들을 해결하기 위해 새롭고 창의적인 해결책을 발표하는 경시대회이다. 우승자는 “미국 최고의 어린 과학자”의 타이틀을 받고 또한 상금 2만5천 달러도 받는다.

정수기술을 개발한 14세 소녀 디피카 쿠르프가 올해 우승자였다. 현재 깨끗한 물을 마실 수 없어 전세계에 큰 문제가 되고 있다. 세계보건기구에 의하면 전세계 중 11억의 인구는 깨끗한 물 없이 살아간다. 쿠르프의 발명품은 태양열을 이용하여 더러운 물을 소독시켜서 비용 효율이 높은 발명품일 뿐만 아니라 친환경적이다.

2등과 4등도 여학생이 차지했다. 2등이었던 캐롤라인 존스는 음식을 더욱 오래 신선하게 지키는 새로운 포장재를 발명했다. 4등이었던 아니샤 시바쿠마는 실명을 일으킬 수 있는 눈병을 앓은 환자들을 돕는 발명품을 발명하였다.
