New research from Northwestern University has found that the benefits of learning a musical instrument will stay with you for life, even if you stop learning as an adult.

One of these benefits is the ability to pick out sounds from a noisy environment. A musician’s brain is good at picking out the sound of their own instrument even when they are playing in a band. Using the same ability, people with musical training can pick out the voice they want to hear even in a crowded restaurant. As a result, even when they age and their ears no longer work very well, musicians can still “hear” better.

People who have had musical training are also better at remembering things and concentrating on tasks. This is helpful when learning new subjects in school. A good working memory is also important for language development.

Nina Kraus, a professor at Northwestern University explains that simply listening to music will not work, in the same way that watching sports on TV does not make you fit. “The point is they’re actively playing a musical instrument,” says the professor.

이점 중 하나는 시끄러운 환경에서 소리를 가려내는 능력이다. 음악인은 밴드와 같이 연주를 해도 본인이 연주하는 악기의 소리를 잘 가려낼 수 있다. 이 같은 능력으로 음악적인 훈련을 받은 사람들은 북적북적하는 레스토랑에서도 듣고 싶은 소리를 가려낼 수 있다. 즉 노화로 인해 청력이 떨어져도 음악인들은 일반 사람들 보단 소리를 더 잘 들을 수 있다.

또한 음악적인 훈련을 받은 사람들은 기억력과 집중력이 좋다. 이는 학교에서 새로운 과목을 배울 때도 도움이 된다. 뛰어난 기억력은 언어 발달에 매우 중요하기 때문이다.

노스웨스턴 대학의 니나 크라우스 교수는 운동 경기를 시청함으로써 본인의 건강에 이점이 안 생기듯이 단순한 음악감상으로 이러한 이득을 볼 수 없다고 설명했다. “적극적으로 음악을 연주하는 것이 중요하다” 라고 크라우스 교수는 주장한다.
