Global warming is perhaps one of the most troubling issues the world is facing right now. Warnings from the scientific community are becoming more urgent. Scientists now think global warming may make it harder for fish to live in the oceans.

Fish are likely to get smaller on average by 2050. Scientists from the University of British Columbia in Canada believe this is due to global warming. Their theory is that global warming triggers an increase in seawater temperatures. As ocean temperatures increase, oxygen levels in the water decrease. This will ultimately, affect a fish’s growth process.

As fish grow, they need more oxygen. However, warmer seawaters - a result of global warming - contain less oxygen. As oxygen supplies become more limited, it becomes more difficult for fish to get enough oxygen to grow properly.

At a certain point, fish won’t be able to grow anymore. “The reductions in body size will affect whole ecosystems,” said lead author William Cheung.

The consequence of global warming on marine ecosystems is likely to be larger than previously expected. The study reports it is necessary to encourage the international community to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

물고기는 자라면서 더 많은 산소가 필요하다. 그러나 지구 온난화로 인해 따뜻한 해수는 상대적으로 산소를 함유량이 적다. 산소 공급이 제한되면 물고기는 성장하는 데 필요한 산소를 얻기 어려워진다. 어느 시점에는 물고기가 더 이상 성장할 수 없게 된다. “물고기의 크기가 작아지는 것은 생태계 전체에 영향을 미칠 것이다,”라고 주요 필자인 윌리엄 챙이 말했다.
