Although our bodies are very good at battling microscopic organisms that make us sick, called pathogens, sometimes, the body’s immune system needs a helping hand, or rather, a helping jab.

The very first case of immunization is thought to have been for an extremely contagious disease called smallpox. Records reveal that China and India were the first to come up with a way to immunize people against the fatal disease. But it is actually Edward Jenner, an English physician, who is credited with pioneering the first smallpox vaccination for general public use. He was the first to prove that vaccinations resulted in immunity to the disease. In fact, Dr. Jenner is known as the father of immunology.

Today, vaccinations are usually given through injections or mouth drops. Vaccinations contain very weak or dead versions of a disease-causing pathogen. When this enters the body, the body’s immune response kicks in and antibodies, a disease fighting army, identifies and kills the pathogen. Because the pathogen that was introduced into the body was either weak or dead, the vaccinated person very rarely feels sick.
 
The amazing thing about the immune system is that whenever it fights off a pathogen, it remembers what it looked like and how to fight it off. In this way, immunization shots are like a practice run for when the body will need to fight a stronger, live version of a harmful organism.

인체에 들어간 병원균 은 약하거나 죽어있어서, 예방 접종을 받은 사람은 거의 아프지는 않다. 면역 체계의 진짜 놀라운 것은 병원균과 싸울 때마다 어떻게 생겼고 어떻게 이겨야 하는지 기억을 해낸다는 사실이다. 이런 방식으로 예방 주사는 몸이 나중에 더욱 강하고 살아있는 해로운 유기체를 만나 싸워야 하는 날을 대비하는 연습과 같다.
