On June 6 (Korea time), Venus will travel across the sun from the Earth’s perspective. This will be a jaw-dropping event as skywatchers will be able to see a tiny black dot gradually move across the surface of the sun. This historic event will be visible from all seven continents. This is a must-see sight for skywatchers, because the chance to see this rare wonder will not come for another 105 years and six months.

The astronomical treat called the ‘Venus Transit of the Sun’ is quite different from a solar eclipse, which occurs when the moon blocks out most of the sun. In this case, Venus will only block the sun partially. So, it is more like a semi-solar eclipse.

It is a rare event, as it has only happened seven times since the telescope was invented, 400 years ago. The last transit of Venus occurred in 2004. Many scientists and skywatchers worldwide are very excited to catch a glimpse of the highly-anticipated astronomical event. Weather permitting, the seven-hour event will be visible from eastern Asia, eastern Australia, New Zealand and the western Pacific, as well as Alaska and northern Canada. In Korea, the Venus transit will last for six hours and 40 minutes, from 7:09 a.m. to 1:49 p.m.
