Seoulites can visit Serae Village in Seocho-gu or go all the way to France to enjoy French culture. However, there are indeed lots of chances to experience it in the heart of Seoul if only you are aware of the various events the French Cultural Center in Seoul주한 프랑스문화원 organizes.

The French Cultural Center in Seoul holds Cine-Danse프랑스 현대무용영상전 at the old Seoul Station, which was recently renovated into Culture Station Seoul 284문화역 서울 284, an open multi-disciplinary cultural space that is accessible to everyone. It is the first time that French films about French dances have been introduced to Korea. According to the French Cultural Center, more than 70 films will be presented over 25 days.

This program modeled Video-Danse비디오무용 at Centre National d’Art et de Culture Georges Pompidou퐁피두센터 in Paris. “I’m happy to have the chance to appreciate French dance films which are the very same things with the ones that are now presented at Pompidou,” said Kim Hee-youn, a university student in Seoul who once lived in Paris. “I really like these open exhibitions. It’s so exotic here. I thought only in Paris can I spend the evening like this,” Kim said at the opening ceremony of Cine-Danse on May 4.

The exhibition traces the history of French modern dance through running choreographies of 20th century dances, recorded videos of performances, documentary films and experimental films. All of the screenings will vividly reproduce French dances from the Paris L’Opera Ballet파리오페라극장발레단 to the contemporary dances.

The French ambassador to Korea, Elisabeth Laurin, said in the introduction of Cine-Danse that it will be a meaningful event to introduce 10 dance companies that represent France in the dancing world since dance is one of the best known genres in French art. “The French Cultural Center in Seoul says dancing is a genre that all different ages of people can enjoy. This free exhibition will unquestionably appeal to a large audience in Seoul,” said Daniel Kapelian, an Attache Audiovisuelles영상교류담당관.

At the opening ceremony, after screening five short video clips of famous performers like Vaslav Nizhinskii, there was a banquet with fine French cuisine and a mini cocktail party. About 150 French and Koreans at the ceremony tasted flan, tart and quiches for free. A French visitor, Blanc Sophie Haeri Park, at the ceremony said, “I think the French Cultural Center in Seoul has always served visitors with their utmost.”

Since the Embassy of France in Korea is plotting to promote mutual understanding by exchanging culture, it is also holding the France Dance Festival, which embraces the Cine-Danse program. Thus, there will be a number of events every day until the end of June. Lectures by a well-known choregrapher Thomas Lebrun and Philippe Noisette, a journalist contributing to Les Inrockuptibles프랑스 예술문화잡지 are to be held on May 17 and 18. If time permits, you should not miss Daniel Larrieu’s masterpiece, Waterproof and Philippe Decoufle’s Le petit Bal since they are regarded as legendary in French modern dancing.

Cine-Danse is open for free to everyone from noon to 7 in the evening except for Mondays, from May 5 to May 29. The rhythmical sounds of the French filled the air. It was such a wonderful experience to be carried along by the French atmosphere in front of the old Seoul Station.

프랑스와 함께 춤을

서울 시민들은 프랑스 문화를 즐기기 위해 서초구의 서래 마을 방문하거나 프랑스까지 간다. 그러나, 주한 프랑스문화원이 주최하는 다양한 행사들에 대해 알고 있다면 서울 한복판에서도 경험할 수 있는 기회들이 정말 많다. 서울 프랑스 문화원은 누구나 관람할 수 있는 다양한 용도의 문화 공간으로 개조된 구 서울역사에서 프랑스 현대무용영상전을 연다.

프랑스 무용에 관한 프랑스 영화들이 한국에 소개된 것은 이번이 처음이다. 프랑스 문화원에 따르면 70편이 넘는 영상들이 25일 동안 상영된다. 이 프로그램은 파리 퐁피두센터의 비디오무용 전시회를 모델로 했다.

파리 거주 경험이 있는 서울의 대학생 김희연씨는 “퐁피두에서 현재 상영되고 있는 것들과 똑같은 프랑스 무용 영상들을 감상할 수 있는 기회를 가질 수 있어서 행복합니다” 라고 말했다. 5월 4일 열렸던 현대무용전의 개막식에서 김씨는 “저는 이런 개방형 전시회를 정말 좋아해요. 여기는 정말 우리나라 같지 않습니다. 저는 파리에서만 이런 저녁을 보낼 수 있다고 생각했어요” 라고 말했다.

전시는 프랑스 현대 무용의 역사를 거슬러 올라가 20세기 무용 안무, 녹화된 공연 비디오, 기록 영화, 실험 영화들을 상영한다. 모든 상영작들은 파리오페라극장발레단부터 현대 무용에 걸친 프랑스 무용들을 생생히 재현한다.

프랑스 대사 엘리자베스 로랑은 현대무용전을 소개하는 자리에서 프랑스 무용계를 대표하는 10개 무용단을 소개하는 것은 프랑스 무용이 프랑스 예술 중에서도 가장 잘 알려진 장르 중에 하나라는 점에서 유의미한 행사라고 말했다.

“서울 프랑스문화관은 무용은 다양한 세대가 즐길 수 있는 장르라고 말한다.

영상교류담당관인 다니엘 꼬뻴량은 “이 전시회는 의심할 여지없이 많은 서울 사람들의 마음을 움직일 것입니다” 라고 말했다.

개막식에서는 바슬라브 니진스키와 같은 유명한 무용수들에 관한 다섯 개의 짧은 영상물들이 상영된 후 맛 좋은 프랑스 요리를 곁들인 만찬과 작은 칵테일 파티가 열렸다.

행사에 참석했던 약 150명의 프랑스인과 한국인들은 플랜, 타르트 그리고 키시를 무료로 맛보았다. 프랑스인 방문객인 블랑 소피 해리 박은 개막식에서 “서울에 있는 프랑스문화원은 방문객들에게 언제나 정성을 다해 대접한다고 생각해요” 라고 말했다.

주한 프랑스 대사관은 문화 교류를 통한 상호 이해의 증진을 목표로 하기 때문에 프랑스 대사관은 프랑스 현대무용영상전을 포함하는 프랑스 무용 페스티벌 또한 주최하고 있다. 따라서 6월 말까지 매일 많은 행사들이 열릴 것이다.

유명한 안무가 토마 르브뤙과 프랑스 예술문화잡지에 글을 기고하는 기자인 필립 누와제트의 강연 또한 5월 17일과 18일에 열릴 것이다.

시간이 허락한다면, 다니엘 라리우의 걸작인 Waterproof와 필립 드쿠플레의 Le petit Bal 을 놓쳐서는 안될 것이다. 왜냐하면 그들은 프랑스 현대 무용의 전설이라고 여겨지기 때문이다.
