The group believes that Lady Gaga should stop her sexually provocative performance on stage. It stated that freedom of expression doesn’t excuse her from vulgar concerts.

Although the superstar chose Seoul as the opener for her world tour, the artist faced a lot of negative sentiment. Conservative Christian groups staged a series of protests against the star, claiming she advocated homosexuality and pornography. While Lady Gaga has been scheduled to perform in Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore and New Zealand, countless people flew to Seoul to join the protests.

The student group Student Alliance for Safeguarding Korean Culture was joined by various youth groups in and outside of the country. Large groups full of participants shared their opposing views against Lady Gaga through social networking services and even decided to boycott any company that supports the superstar. While many churches across Seoul held prayers and services against the influential star, critics claimed that cultural tolerance is required to see what Lady Gaga does and what she stands for.

Known as a supporter of gay rights Lady Gaga has a few enemies who attack her beliefs. And because she uses religious symbols in her concerts, she is often criticized by religious groups. Sadly for the artist, the recent concert provided by Hyundai Card, the official sponsor, was not just about screaming fans of her music. The 26-year-old star arrived in Seoul via her private jet, didn’t appear in public, and even refused to hold a press conference in Seoul.

From a social perspective, it is logical that such protests against the artist takes place. Many believe that the artist is perverting youth. From another angle, people must know that she is highly religious and doesn’t set out to destroy young people. The outspoken artist, famous for her unacceptable performances and her enormous celebrity power, is someone people can rely on. There are those who believe that her performances provide relief or an anchor to the uncertainties and anxieties of the real world. There was a time when the king of rock and roll, Elvis Presley, wasn’t accepted when he first appeared in the music scene. People once pointed their fingers at Seo Tae-ji for his piercing and dyed bangs due to their conservative views. Multiplatinum mega star Eminem wasn’t appreciated in the hip hop genre and the African-American communities because he was Caucasian. By all means, there is no clear way to identify or indicate whether Lady Gaga’s performance is indeed dangerous and offensive. The artist has a reputation for being a perfectionist in Hollywood. We need to appreciate and respect that she has invested countless hours in creating a performance that we may at times feel uncomfortable with. Then again, we should also take into consideration the views of critics and opponents of her art.
