Leaping through the air, the nation’s top basketball stars recently put on a show at the Jamsil Gymnasium in Seoul. The Korean Basketball League (KBL) celebrated its annual All-Star weekend last week. Honored with the most valuable player award, Changwon LG Sakers forward Moon Tae-young rose to the top for the first time since his 2009 KBL debut.

Approximately 9000 fans gathered to watch the best players from the KBL go head to head. Moon, who was granted Korean citizenship last year with his brother Tae-jong, showed why he was such a pivotal player in the league. The 34-year-old Moon scored 24 points, had 10 rebounds and four assists. He helped the Dream team achieve a 143-119 victory over the Magic. The score was the largest win in KBL All-Star Game history. Moon received 23 of 63 votes from KBL-registered reporters to win the MVP honors. Throughout KBL’s history, two other naturalized Koreans won the MVP award at the KBL All-Star Game. They were brothers Lee Dong-joon and Lee Seung-joon, who won 2009 and 2010 respectively.

Some of the big names making big moves on the court were Ulsan Mobis Phoebus point guard Yang Dong-geun, Wonju Dongbu Promy center Rod Benson and Seoul Samsung Thunders forward Lee Seung-joon. Scoring 25 points, including seven 3-pointers, Yang showed the crowd that he’s got the magic snap when it comes to shooting. As for American imports Benson and Lee, who is known for his huge leaps in the air, they consistently surprised the audience with astonishing slam dunks.

Just like every year, the All-Star Game wasn’t all about winning for both teams. The game was an opportunity for players to show off their individual moves and entertain the fans. The Dream team composed of players from the Promy, Sonicboom, Phoebus, Sakers and Orion. They dominated the Magic team, which was composed of players from the Thunders, Knights, Elephants, KGC and Egis. The Magic had a hard time putting the ball in the basket. The Dream team ended the first half leading 71 to 48. Although it was the highest score margin in the first half in the history of the KBL All-Star Game, there were plenty of specials to cheer up the crowd. There were lots of treats such as the one-on-one tournament, the skills challenge, and the slam dunk and 3-point contests.
 
Cameras flashed and loud screams filled the audience when Kim Hyun-min of the Busan KT Sonicboom emulated the main character of Japanese sports comic series Slam Dunk. Showing off hilarious celebrations accompanied by dances and costumes, the 24-year-old forward stunned the crowd with his super athleticism and crafted dunk skills. As for the 3-point contest, Jeonju KCC Egis guard Chon Tae-poong won the title by swishing the basket from just about every corner on the distant three point line. 

프로농구 올스타전

최근 공중으로 높이 뛰어오르는, 한국의 최고 농구 스타들이 서울 잠실실내체육관에서 모습을 드러냈다.

지난 주 KBL은 연례행사 올스타전을 열었다. 가장 가치가 큰 선수상의 영광을 안은 창원 LG 세이커스 포워드 문태영은 2009년 KBL 데뷔 이래 처음으로 1위에 올랐다.

KBL의 최고 선수들을 보기 위해 모인 약 구천 명의 팬들이 정면으로 맞섰다. 작년에 형 문태종과 함께 한국 국적을 취득한 문태영 선수는 그 리그에서 그가 왜 중추적인 선수인지를 보여주었다.

34살의 문태영 선수는 24득점, 10 리바운드 그리고 4 어시스트를 기록했다. 그는 143 대 119 승리로 이끄는데 도움을 주었다. 그 점수는 KBL 올스타 경기 역사상 가장 큰 승리였다.

문태영 선수는 MVP 영예를 안기 위해 KBL에 등록된 기자들로부터 63표 중 23표를 받았다. KBL 역사상, KBL 올스타 경기에서 또 다른 두 명의 귀화 선수들이 MVP상을 받았다.

그들은 바로 형제 이동준과 이승준이었다. 그들은 2009년과 2010년에 각각 MVP를 탔다.

그 경기장에서 활약이 큰 유명인들은 울산 모비스 포버스 포인트가드 양동근, 원주 동구 프로미 센터 로드 벤슨 그리고 서울 삼성 선더스 포워드 이승준이었다.

비록 KBL 올스타전 역사상 전반전에서 가장 높은 차이를 보였지만, 군중을 북돋아줄 수 있는 특별한 것이 많았다.

1대 1 대결, 스킬스 챌린지, 덩크 슛 그리고 3점 슛과 같은 특별한 번외 행사들이 많았다.

부산 KT 소닉붐의 김현민 선수가 일본 스포츠 코믹 시리즈 슬램 덩크의 주인공(강백호)을 따라 했을 때 카메라 후래시가 터지고 큰 비명소리가 관중석을 꽉 채웠다.

춤과 의상이 조화를 이룬 재미있는 축하행사들을 뽐낸, 이 24살의 포워드는 최강의 스포츠열을 가진 군중을 놀라게 했고 덩크 기술에 공을 들였다.

3점 슛에 관해서 말하자면, 전주 KCC 이지스 가드 전태풍 선수는 그 먼 3점 슛 선 모든 코너에서 골대에 공을 넣는 타이틀을 거머쥐었다. (3점슛 콘테스트는 시간 제한 없이 5군데 위치서 5번씩 슛을 던져 점수로 우승을 가린다.)
