On December 14, The Teen Times Editor-in-Chief Julia Baik and five teen reporters got together for a special occasion. They paid a visit to the National Museum of Korea국립중앙박물관 to attend a meaningful ceremony. At this event, the Wonder Girls were appointed Goodwill Ambassadors for the Special Olympics World Winter Games PyeongChang 2013. Baik and the teen reporters also had a once in a lifetime opportunity to exclusively interview Na Kyung-won, chairwoman of the 2013 Games Organizing Committee.

The Special Olympics is an international sporting event for people with intellectual disabilities. Founded by Eunice Kennedy Shriver in 1968, the Special Olympics is now a global festival that encourages intellectually disabled people all over the world. The event provides them with opportunities to realize their potential, develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, and experience joy and friendship. The Special Olympics World Winter Games PyeongChang 2013 will be held from January 26 to February 6, 2013. It will be the largest Special Olympics World Winter Games, featuring seven categories of winter sports: alpine skiing, cross country skiing, snowboarding, snow shoeing, speed skating, figure skating, and floor hockey. Under the motto “Together We Can!” 3,300 intellectually disabled athletes from 105 different nations will come to participate in this event. Korea will be the third Asian country to host the Special Olympics. Here’s what our teen reporters had to say about their special experience.

December 14 was a very special day for me because I had the chance to interview very special people: the Wonder Girls and Na Kyung-won. The Special Olympics committee appointed the popular girl band as Goodwill Ambassadors for the Special Olympics World Winter Games PyeongChang 2013. At the press conference, the Wonder Girls shared their love and passion for the Special Olympics. After the conference, Chairwoman Na spared some of her precious time for an exclusive interview with The Teen Times. According to her, the Special Olympics Committee is trying to raise awareness of the event in various ways. I realized that teenagers have significant roles in the Special Olympics. One day, I hope that the Special Olympics will become the most popular event. Let’s keep this message deep in our hearts: “Together We Can!”

I got the chance to interview the Wonder Girls and Chairwoman Na Kyung-won. The popular singers said they want to give healthy energy, love, and hope to people with intellectual disabilities through the Special Olympics. I believe that they will help promote the meaningful event. chairwoman Na told us some impressive things. I can’t forget some of the things she said. “The Special Olympics will help accept the intellectually disabled into our society. It shouldn’t be a onetime event. Even after the games are over, we should embrace them as members of our society,” she said. I could see her true heart for the disabled. Our special time with Na made me think about the disabled in our society. From now on, I will do my best to promote the Special Olympics. After all, everyone is precious regardless of their health conditions or appearance!

In 2013, South Korea will host the Special Olympics. However, there are still so many people who don’t know about this event. The Special Olympics is a non-profit event for intellectually disabled athletes. It hasn’t gotten much attention. Now, it’s time to give our attention to those who are neglected. We must embrace them into our society. We all should all feel very lucky and proud to host the international sports competition.

Interviewing Na Kyung-won and the Wonder Girls was a very special experience for me. I learned more about how the Special Olympics was organized, and how important this event is for people with disabilities. I agree with what Chairwoman Na said. By hosting this event, we should let the world know that people with disabilities are our friends and neighbors.

12월 14일, 틴타임즈 편집장 줄리아 백과 틴 리포터 5명은 특별한 행사를 위해 모였다. 그들은 의미 있는 행사에 참가하기 위해 국립중앙박물관을 방문했다. 이번 행사에서, 원더걸스는 스페셜 올림픽 세계 동계 올림픽 평창 2013의 친선대사로 임명되었다. 백편집장과 틴리포터들 역시 2013 올림픽 조직 위원회 나경원 위원장을 독점 인터뷰할 일생 일대의 기회를 가졌다.

12월 14일은 내게 매우 특별한 사람들 즉 원더걸스와 나경원 의원을 인터뷰 할 기회를 가졌기에 매우 특별한 날이다.

스페셜 올림픽 위원회는 스폐셜 월드 동계 올림픽 평창 2013의 친선대사로 그 인기 걸그룹을 임명했다. 기자 회견에서, 원더걸스는 스페셜 올림픽을 위해 사랑과 열정을 함께 했다. 기자 회견 후, 나경원 위원장은 틴타임즈와의 독점 인터뷰를 위해 그녀의 귀중한 시간을 할애했다.

나는 원더걸스와나경원 위원장을 인터뷰할 기회를 얻었다. 인기 가수들은 그들이 스페셜 올림픽을 통해 지적 장애인들에게 건강한 에너지, 사랑 그리고 희망을 주고 싶다고 말했다. 나는 그들이 이 의미 있는 행사를 홍보하는데 도움이 될 것임을 믿고 있다.

나경원 위원장은 우리에게 어떤 인상적인 말을 해주었다. 나는 그녀가 말한 몇 마디를 잊을 수 없다. “스페셜 올림픽은 우리 사회로 지적 장애인들을 받아들이는 데 도움을 줄 것이다. 그것은 한 번의 행사가 되어서는 안 된다.

올림픽이 끝나도, 우리는 우리 사회의 일원으로 그들을 안아주어야 한다,”라고 그녀는 말했다. 나는 장애인들에 대한 그녀의 진실한 마음을 알 수 있었다. 나경원 위원장과의 특별한 시간은 우리 사회에 있는 장애인들에 대해 생각하게끔 했다.

2013년에, 한국은 스페셜 올림픽을 주최할 것이다. 하지만, 이 사건에 대해 모르는 사람들이 너무 많다. 스페셜 올림픽은 지적 장애 선수들을 위한 비영리적인 행사이다. 그것은 많은 관심을 받지 못했다. 이제 도외시된 사람들에게 관심을 줘야 할 때이다.

우리는 그들을 우리 사회 속으로 받아들여야 한다. 우리는 모두 매우 운이 좋다는 것을 느끼고 국제 스포츠 대회를 주최하는 것을 자랑스럽게 여겨야 한다.
