At the 2010 SBS Awards, actor Cha In-pyo made a statement that attracted widespread attention. He said: “You should perform good deeds since a new year has begun. Support poor children around the world through Compassion. The moment you support them, your lives will be happier.” He continued stating that people could live a better life through an organization called Compassion. So, what kind of organization is Compassion?

Compassion was founded in 1952 to help Korean War orphans. Reverend Everett Swanson took the helm to help children who were struggling to overcome hunger and cold at the garbage dump where they lived. The organization began providing the children with food, shelter, education and health care, as well as teaching them Christianity. Korea was supported for 41 years until 1993. Then in 2003, Korea emerged as the 10th sponsor country for Compassion; going from a recipient country to a contributing country. Today, 26 countries including Korea provide support to more than 1.2 million children around the world through Compassion.

Compassion is still deeply involved with Korea, and differentiates itself from other organizations as an international child-rearing institution, not an aid agency. Compassion believes that changing the lives of children leads to changing the lives of families, and ultimately the whole of society. Providing clothes, food and housing is indeed important for children, but Compassion believes that improving children’s circumstances doesn’t solve their poverty. Compassion stresses the one-to-one sponsor program as well.

This one-to-one sponsorship program maintains support until the child graduates from high school. Through monthly gifts, prayers and letters, sponsors invest in the lives of children living in extreme poverty in a more personal manner. Strengthening the children’s beliefs that someone across the globe cares about them and their future reinforces the conviction that they are precious and important. This connection is an invaluable support system that sponsors provide in conjunction to their basic, material needs. Other programs such as the Leadership Development Program, Complementary Interventions, and the Child Survival Program also help poor children.

Through the concern and assistance of sponsors, Compassion could provide children with an overall education and support line, in the hopes that they may discover their own talents and grow into influential people who could help others. All Compassion-sponsored children have the opportunity to develop their God-given potential and be released from the poverty that has trapped them for generations.

At Compassion, the supporting sponsors, as well as the volunteers are all active participants. People who share their talents and their time and energy with poor children are called Compassion mates. There are four types of Compassion mates; Office work mates volunteer to improve and speed up service, Event mates plan various events and lead people to support, Translation mates help sponsors communicate with the children, and Specialty mates utilize their own talents. Furthermore, Voice of Compassion’s works have stood out, doing their best to inform many people about the poor children’s circumstances around the world and lead them to support the cause.

Priest Tae-Seok Lee said that “If we divide one with ten, it becomes 1/10 according to the world’s mathematics. On the other hand, according to the heaven’s true mathematics, it swells ‘thousand’ or ‘ten thousand’ times because it shares 1 with one another.” He claimed that only endless sharing is the root of happiness. How about supporting and raising one poor child through Compassion and saving the money normally spent for leisure time? Or, how about spending some time volunteering for poor children with Compassion? People donating their time to bond and develop relationships with children in need feel better and happier because of their involvement with the organization.

예수님의 이름으로 가난에서 아이들을 해방시키는 단체 ‘컴패션’

2010년 SBS 시상식에서, 배우 차인표는 큰 관심을 끌만한 언급을 했다.

그는 말했다: “새해가 시작됐으니 좋은 일을 하십시오.
컴패션을 통해 세계의 가난한 어린이들을 도와주십시오.
그들을 돕는 순간, 당신의 삶은 더 행복해 질 것입니다.”

그렇다면, 컴패션은 어떠한 단체인가? 컴패션은 한국 전쟁 고아들을 돕기 위해 1952년 설립되었다. 에버렛 스완슨 목사가 쓰레기장에 살며 배고픔과 추위와 힘겹게 싸우는 어린이들을 돕기 위해 컴패션을 설립했다. 컴패션은 아이들에게 기독교에 대해 가르치는 것뿐 아니라, 음식, 쉴 곳, 교육 그리고 의료 서비스를 제공하기 시작했다.
한국은 1993년까지 41년 동안 도움을 받았다. 그리고 나서 2003년, 한국은 컴패션의 열 번째 후원자가 되었다; 수혜국에서 기부국이 된 것이다.

오늘날, 한국을 포함한 26개국은 세계 120만 명 이상의 어린이들에게 컴패션을 통해 도움을 주고 있다. 컴패션은 아직도 한국과 깊은 관계가 있으며, 구호 기관이 아닌 국제적인 어린이 후원 단체로서 다른 조직들과 차별화되어 있다. 컴패션은 어린이들의 삶을 변화시키는 것이 가족의 삶을 변화시키고 궁극적으로 사회 전체를 변화시킨다고 믿는다. 의식주를 제공하는 것은 어린이들에게 정말로 중요하지만, 컴패션은 어린이들의 환경을 개선시키는 것이 그들의 빈곤함을 해결시킨다고 생각하지 않는다.

컴패션 친구에는 네 종류가 있다; 사무실에서 일하는 사람들은 서비스 개선을 위해 봉사하며, 이벤트 담당은 여러 행사를 계획하고 사람들로 하여금 후원할 수 있도록 해주며, 통역을 담당하는 친구는 후원자들이 어린이들과 잘 소통할 수 있게 도와주며, 특별한 장기를 가진 친구는 그들의 재능을 이용한다. 게다가, 세계의 가난한 어린이들에 대해 많은 사람들에게 알리고 도움을 주기 위해 그들의 최선을 다해, 컴패션의 목소리는 세간에 돋보여왔다.

이태석 목사는 말했다 “하나를 열로 나누면, 세상의 수학 법칙에 따른다면 그것은 1/10이 됩니다. 반면, 천국의 수학 법칙에 따르면, 그것은 ‘천’ 혹은 ‘만’배로 부풀어 오릅니다, 왜냐하면 그것은 하나를 서로 나누기 때문입니다.”
그는 끊임 없이 나누는 것이 행복의 뿌리라고 주장했다.

컴패션을 통해서 레저를 위해 소비될 돈을 아껴 가난한 한 어린이를 양육하고 기르는 것이 어떠한가? 아니면, 컴패션과 함께 가난한 어린이들을 위해 시간을 보내는 것이 어떠한가? 컴패션에 소속되어 어려움에 처한 어린이들을 위해 시간을 할애하는 사람들은 더 행복할 것이다.
