The 2011 Korea Science Festival, the largest science festival in Korea, was held at EXCO in Daegu from August 10 to 15. The Korea Science Festival offered a variety of hands-on experiences with science exhibitions, lectures, and programs.

The Korea Science Festival, first held in 1997, is hosted every year by the Korea Foundation for the Advancement of Science and Creativity (KOFAC)한국과학창의재단, which aims to increase people’s interest and support for science, and to foster a scientific mindset. This year’s theme was “Exciting science travel to the future.” Government-supported research institutes, companies, colleges, and 3,500 domestic and foreign experts took part in this event, presenting an amazing array of 360 exhibits.

During the first two days, a Nobel Prize laureate, Douglas D. Osheroff, and the first Korean astronaut, Yi So-yeon, gave a special lecture. On the opening day, more than 30,000 people from around the country came to EXCO to partake in this fabulous and educational event.

“I want to show Korean kids that chem is interesting. Enjoy chemistry!” stated Eliza Warszawik from the Flogiston Chemical Scientific Society in Poland. She and her team attracted a large crowd by showing experiments using dry ice, the chemical reaction of jelly, and thunder. She stated that she was really glad and honored to participate in the event. KOFAC invited many famed foreign science groups to this festival which gave people the opportunity to learn from advanced foreign technology.

Many young and friendly elementary and middle school students presented their own booths at the festival. They taught me how airplanes move and how to make T-50 airplane models, which is the first Korean supersonic jet. Alongside these booths were a staggering 800 science booths, which students operated by themselves over the course of the six days.

Apart from the student booths, there were also many other exciting exhibits. One of them was the Korea Electric Technology Research Institute 한국전기연구원. At the festival, they unveiled their concept for the first electric car and magnetic levitation train using superconductivity. The train floated up into the air and moved above the railway. They are still working on the train and said that it will be blazing at the speed of 600 kilometers an hour someday.

I think this event was an amazing place to go to beat the summer heat, see some amazing exhibits, meet some amazing people and hear some amazing speeches. It took more than 5 hours to just look around. As a lover of all things science, the event was very meaningful for me to be able to speak to all the scientists and educators. It was a very child-friendly festival and all the children there had a great time. I am definitely going to go again. But next year, I hope to be running a booth of my own.

2011 한국 과학 축제

한국에서 가장 큰 과학 축제인 2011 한국 과학 축제가 대구 EXCO 에서 8월 10일부터 15일까지 열렸다. 한국 과학 축제는 과학 전시와 강의 그리고 프로그램과 함께 다양하게 직접 해보는 체험을 제공한다.

1997년에 처음 개최된 한국 과학 축제는 과학에 대한 사람들의 관심과 지지를 증가시키고, 과학적인 태도를 조성함을 목표로 한국 과학 창의 재단에 의해서 매년 주최되었다.

올해의 주제는 “미래로의 신나는 과학 여행”이었다. 정부가 지원하는 연구기관, 회사, 대학 그리고 3,500여 개의 국내 또는 해외 전문가들이 360개의 전시품 모음을 제안하면서 이번 축제에 참가했다.

처음 이틀 동안은, 노벨상 수상자인 더글라스 오셔로프 박사와 첫 번째 한국인 우주 비행사인 이소연이 특별 강의를 했다. 개최 날에는, 해외의 30,000명이 넘는 사람들이 EXCO에 이러한 멋지고 교육적인 행사에 참가하러 방문했다.

“나는 화학이 재미있다는 것을 한국 어린이들에게 보여주고 싶다. 화학을 즐겨라!”라고 폴란드의 플로지스톤 화학 과학 협회 소속 엘리자 워즈자윅이 밝혔다.

그녀와 그 팀은 드라이아이스를 이용한, 젤리와 번개의 화학 반응 실험을 보여줌으로써 많은 관중을 매료시켰다.

한국 과학 창의 재단은 진보한 해외 기술을 배울 수 있는 기회를 사람들에게 주기 위해 많은 유명한 해외 과학 단체를 행사에 초대했다. 어리고 친절한 많은 초등학생과 중학생들이 그들의 부스에서 의견을 나타냈다.

학생들은 나에게 어떻게 비행기가 움직이며 한국 첫 번째 초음속 제트기인 T-50 비행기 모델을 어떻게 만드는지 가르쳐 주었다. 이러한 전시장과 나란히, 6일의 과정 동안 학생들 스스로 운영한, 믿기 어려울 정도인 팔백여 개의 과학 전시장이 있었다.

학생들의 부스와 떨어져서, 다른 흥미로운 전시들도 많았다. 그 중 하나가 한국 전기 연구원이었다. 축제에서 그들은 첫 번째 전기 자동차와 초전도성을 이용한 자기 부상열차의 개념을 밝혔다.

열차는 공중에 떠서 철로 위로 움직인다. 그들은 열차를 아직 연구 중이며 언젠가 시속 600 킬로미터의 속도로 맹렬하게 달릴 수도 있을 것이라고 말했다.

나는 이러한 행사가 여름 열기도 식히고, 놀라운 전시회도 보고, 놀라운 사람들도 만나며, 놀라운 연설을 듣기에 좋은 곳이라고 생각한다. 이곳을 둘러보는데 5시간 이상이 걸린다.

과학 모든 것들의 팬으로써, 이 축제는 모든 과학자들과 교육자들과 이야기 할 수 있다는 면에서 나에게 굉장히 의미가 있다. 이 축제는 어린이들에게 꼭 맞는 행사였으며, 모든 아이들이 그곳에서 좋은 시간을 보냈다.

난 다시 이곳에 꼭 갈 것이다. 하지만 내년에는, 나도 내 전시장을 운영하길 바래본다.
