It sure was a very festive party for the former president of South Africa. Surrounded by family members Nelson Mandela celebrated his 93rd birthday. Across the nation millions sang Happy Birthday to the special leader and attended various events to celebrate Mandela’s birthday.

In South Africa, approximately 12 million schoolchildren started their day by singing a special version of the birthday song, sending good wishes to the aged leader. Reports stated that the African state is planning to have the event recorded in the Guinness Book of Records as the largest group of people who celebrated a single person’s birthday.

The world leaders didn’t stay quiet either. U.S. President Barack Obama and U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon alongside countless leaders sent their statements to tell the world about the first black South African leader’s life. Mandela dedicated his life to root out racial discrimination and just about every anti-human rights practices happening in his country.

Mandela’s contributions as a human rights advocate, freedom fighter and peacemaker was recognized with a Nobel Peace Prize in 1993. His continuous humanitarian efforts moved the United Nations to pass a resolution in 2009 to declare July 18 as Nelson Mandela International Day. South Korea didn’t miss out on the celebrations.
Under the globally shared theme, “Take Action. Inspire Change!”  a campaign was hosted by the South African Embassy in Seoul. The campaign urged people to emulate Mandela for the 67 years he spent in public life by giving 67 minutes of their personal time to their communities. The World Cup Peace Park in northern Seoul was filled with embassy officials guiding 40 orphans and their guardians. Messages of peace were posted on a peace tree and they learned a South African song “Shosholoza.” Other embassy staff members and a number of volunteers involved in the campaign visited needy farmers in Incheon to assist in farming activities.

The first secretary from the embassy announced that Mandela’s life and legacy should be an inspiration to all. He added that the leader’s lifetime spent as a human rights lawyer, an activist, a prisoner and a president is worth remembering as a true reflection of humanity.

As South Korea is quickly turning into a multicultural nation, the 67 minute campaign promoted by the South African Embassy turned out to be essential. The campaign’s objective is to gradually reduce racial discrimination against the minorities in our society, as the influx of foreign nationals has quickly increased in recent years. In Korea, there are approximately 2 million foreign nationals, including immigrant wives and workers from economically poor nations. Countless foreigners experience hardships and discrimination due to their color and origin.
Celebrating Mandela’s birthday calls for all nations to internalize the value of care, tolerance, forgiveness and public service his name represents.


93번째 생일을 축하하며

인권 옹호자, 자유 투사 그리고 평화주의자로서 만델라의 공헌은 1993년 노벨 평화상으로 인정 됐다. 그의 끊임 없는 인도주의적 노력으로 미국은 2009년 7월 18일을 넬슨 만델라의 날로 지정하는 법안을 통과시켰다.

한국도 축하 인사를 빼먹지 않았다. “행동하라, 변화를 추구하라!”는 공통된 주제 하에, 그 캠페인은 서울 남 아프리카 대사관에 의해 주최되었다.

67년 동안의 만델라의 공직 생활을 기리기 위해 67분 동안 남아공 사람들이 이웃을 위해 봉사하는 시간을 가졌다. 서울 북부에 위치한 월드컵 경기장은 40명의 고아들과 안내자 그리고 대사관 직원으로 가득 찼다. 평화의 메시지가 평화의 나무에 게재되었고 그들은 남아프리카 노래인 “Shosholoza”를 배웠다.

다른 대사관 직원들과 캠페인에 관계된 많은 자원봉사자들이 일손을 필요로 하는 인천 농가를 방문했다. 남아공 대사관 서기관은 만델라의 삶과 유산은 모든 사람에게 감화가 되어야 한다고 말했다. 인권 변호사, 사회 운동가, 죄수 그리고 대통령으로 보낸 그의 삶은 인류애의 진정한 반영으로 기억될 가치가 있다.

수 많은 외국인들이 그들의 피부색과 출신 때문에 역경과 차별을 겪는다. 만델라의 생일을 축하하는 것은 그의 이름이 대표하듯 모든 나라로 하여금 다른 사람을 돌보는 것, 관용, 용서의 가치를 내면화 하는 것을 요한다.
