The deal is complete. South Korean President Lee Myung-bak firmly shook hands with International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Jacques Rogge during a session in Durban, South Africa. South Korea is the winning bidder for the 2018 Winter Olympic Games.

President Lee and the delegates made an outstanding and impressive final presentation. After two painful failed attempts, the recent dramatic triumph of the country’s sports diplomacy made tens of millions of Koreans across the world rejoice as the IOC announced PyeongChang as the host of the 2018 Winter Olympic Games.

The small city of PyeongChang is known as a mountainous region. Over the last 11 years, it has been turned into a world-class ski resort. It has been announced that the government and sports-related authorities have invested approximately $1.5 billion to build sports facilities in and around the city. To promote the city and win over IOC members, countless high-profile figures including President Lee and corporate tycoons joined forces. The recent triumph is considered the nation’s biggest victory since the 1988 Summer Olympic Games in Seoul. Samsung chairman Lee Kun-hee, who is an IOC member was pardoned last year after being convicted of breach of trust. He was told to resume his efforts to promote PyeongChang.

President Lee sure played his role in Durban. To ensure a successful bid, he flew to South Africa days ahead of the final presentation to make a promotional face off against his German and French counterparts. The final presentation was against German Chancellor Angela Merkel, German President Christian Wuff, and French Prime Minister Francois Fillon.

The president pleaded with world leaders to support PyeongChang’s bid. It was during summits and state visits that he continuously played sports diplomacy. The President had sent outleters and made phone calls to each of the IOC members via his ambassadors or special envoys. When he arrived in Durban, he immediately held one-on-one meetings with IOC members and attended IOC events, media interviews and strategic meetings with the nation’s big committee officials. It has been reported that President Lee and the officials rehearsed the final presentation until everyone’s throats hurt.

Before making the final presentation, president Lee said during an interview that it was his responsibility to help PyeongChang win the rights to host the 2018 Winter Olympics. He continued by saying that South Korea will turn into a new mecca for winter sports in Asia. The president definitely served his duty. He reassured the nation and the world that his commitment for PyeongChang is solid. Figure skating queen and Olympic champion Kim Yu-na also played her part by contributing an article to a South African daily newspaper and playing her role in the final presentation.


독일과 프랑스보다 더 빛난 한국
