Forty-one major art companies from Korea and abroad came to express their creative and artistic spirits at this year’s Hi! Seoul Festival in Seoul, South Korea. The artists and performers used four primary locations to display their talents: the Yeouido Hangang Park, Cheonggye Square, Gwanghwamun Square, and the Seoul Square. This year, the theme was “Non-Verbal Performances”, which strove to communicate and express different cultural and artistic ideas through a variety of methods independent of the spoken word, such as with music and body language!

The Hi! Seoul Festival is held four times a year -once at the beginning of every season. This spring, the events were held from May 5th to May 10th. It was kicked off with a street theatre parade consisting of some of the world’s top performers and over 1,000 people in Seoul came out to enjoy and take part in the revelry. Cultures from all over the world gathered to show off their own unique performances and entertain the crowds, all without speaking a single word. All of the performances were done with musical instrumentals, body movements, or creative and extravagant displays. Even with only these basic methods of communication, the festival and its performers had everyone that was watching mesmerized.

Following the theme of using instrumentals, the Spanish theatre troupe “La Fura dels Baus” presented a show titled “Rainbow Drops” which featured percussion instruments, acrobats, and fireworks. Some of the attractions also had a light-hearted tone. The company “LES PARFAITS INCONNUS”, a group from Quebec, Canada, put on a hilarious comedy show called “It’s Coming”. Mixed with acrobats, jugglers, and musicians, the group created their own kind of circus act and they even put on a rock concert ? all without words!

However, not all of the events were actually performed, but rather displayed. Take for example “The Great Book”; a towering nine-meter-tall sculpture dedicated to promote Australian Culture and of course, books. The sculpture was made by the Australian art group “Well” from the covers of books plastered onto its walls, folding out naturally like a real book. Non-verbal performances emerged from the giant sculpture to entertain and captivate its onlookers.

The performances were all so diverse and wonderful in so many ways. Some were meant to dazzle while others were meant to create laughter and amusement. In the end, the entertainers as well as the citizens of Korea had an adventure exploring the multitude of cultures that came together to celebrate the 2011 Hi! Seoul Festival. 


하이 서울 페스티벌 2011

한국과 해외의 51곳의 주요 예술단들이 올해 그들의 독창적이고 예술적 정신을 표현하기 위해 하이 서울 페스티벌 2011에 왔다. 예술가들과 연기자들은 그들의 재능을 선보이기 위해 4곳의 주요 장소를 이용했다: 여의도 한강 공원, 청계천 광장, 광화문 광장 그리고 서울 광장. 올해, 그 테마(주제)는 “넌버벌 퍼포먼스”였는데, 음악과 몸짓과 같은 구어에 의존하는 다양한 방법들을 통해 다양한 문화적 예술적 아이디어를 전달하고 표현하려고 애썼다.

하이 서울페스티벌은 한 해에 네 번 즉 매 계절이 시작될 때 열린다. 올 봄에, 그 행사는 5월 5일에서 10일까지 열렸다. 세계 최고의 연기자들로 구성된 거리 공연 퍼레이드가 시작되었고 천 명이 넘는 서울 사람들이 즐기러 나와 그 행사에 참여했다.

전 세계 문화들은 어떤 언어도 말하지 않고, 그들만의 독특한 공연을 뽐내고 관중을 즐겁게 해 주러 왔다. 모든 공연들은 악기, 몸짓 혹은 독창적이고 화려한 전시로 이뤄졌다. 의사 소통을 위한 이러한 기본적인 방법들만으로도 축제와 연기자들은 관람하는 사람들을 매료시켰다.

기악곡을 사용하는 테마를 따르는, 스페인 공연단 “'라 푸라 델 바우스”은 “레인보우 드롭스”라는 쇼를 선보였는데 이는 타악기, 곡예사 그리고 불꽃놀이를 특징으로 삼았다. 명소들 중 일부 역시 편한 마음으로 즐길 수 있는 분위기였다.

캐나다 퀘벡에서 온 공연단 “르페 앙코뉘”는 “잇츠 커밍”이라는 매우 재미 있는 코미디쇼를 선보였다. 곡예사와 음악가를 혼용시킨 그 공연단은 그들 만의 서커스 묘기를 뽐내고 심지어 록 콘서트를 열었다.

하지만, 사실 모든 행사가 공연이 아니라 어느 정도 전시형태를 띠었다. “더 그레이트 북”를 예로 들어 보자; 호주 문화는 물론 책까지 홍보하기 위해 헌정된 우뚝 솟은 9m 높이의 조각품. 조각품은 호주 예술단”Well”에 의해 만들어졌는데, 벽에 도배를 하다시피 해 놓은 책 표지가 진짜 책처럼 자연스럽게 펼쳐져 있었다. 넌버벌 공연은 구경꾼들을 즐겁게 해 주고 사로잡기 위해 거대한 조각품을 선보였다.

그 공연은 매우 많은 방식으로 다양하고 훌륭했다. 어떤 공연들은 황홀함으로, 다른 공연들은 웃음과 재미로 다가왔다. 마지막으로, 한국의 시민들뿐만 아니라 공연단원들은 2011 하이 서울 페스티벌을 함께 축하하러 온 다수의 문화를 탐험하는 모험을 했다.
