Besides the fact that London will be hosting the 2012 Olympics, it is also the birthplace of theatre and literature. The truth of the matter is, his works are intriguing and entertaining. Perhaps that is why the Globe Theater in London stages countless plays written by Shakespeare. It has been announced that 38 acting companies from around the globe will stage Shakespeare’s works in different languages to celebrate the 2012 Olympics. Stunningly, one of the troupes will be from Korea.

Although the exact date hasn’t been decided, the Yohangza Company confirmed that a Korean adaptation of Shakespeare’s play will be staged at London’s prestigious theater. Thirty-eight troupes from across the world will engage in the special program for six weeks beginning next year on April 23, which is also Shakespeare’s birthday. Since the Globe Theater was first built in 1599 and is home to Shakespeare’s spirit, the opportunity has much meaning for the Korean company.

The company’s rendition of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream 한 여름 밤의 꿈 was first performed in 2002 in Korea. The Korean troupe toured 20 countries across the world, collecting rave reviews for its original and creative reinterpretation. Shakespeare’s original text was imbued with traditional oriental make-up and costumes, accompanied by tribal music and choreography.

The imaginative twists in the Korean version received much attention from fans. When the play was staged at the Barbican Center in London in 2006, the audience was thrilled. The Korean production continued to make stunning performances at the Sydney Festival as well as the Hong Kong Arts Festival.

Yohangza, which was established in 1997, is renowned for mixing the past and present by experimenting with Korean elements, spirit, and style. It had a recognizable history over a decade and won major awards in the field of theatre. Let’s hope the company’s unique presentation appeals to the international audiences once again in London.
