I stand before the classroom. My mouth opens. “Hello, my name is Lee Min-kyung. I go to Seojeong Middle School. Nice to meet you all.” The elementary students applaud. Today is a special day. It is a day I both learn and teach at the same time.

I am one of the students who participate in the S.J. Mentoring Program. It is a great program that allows me to learn and share what I know with elementary students. “S.J.” stands for Seojeong Middle School, and at the same time, it stands for Senior and Junior. S.J. Mentoring is a volunteer program. Students who participate in this program go to Aram Elementary School, Seojeong Elementary School, and the Goyang Youth Center.

We prepare: we are excited and nervous the day before we become a mentor. We read storybooks to the elementary students. It sounds easy, but it is pretty hard once you try it. Since the students are young, some of them quickly lose their concentration. So, we need to prepare some materials to help them focus. Our main goal is to read English storybooks to get students interested in English. We also prepare games, word cards, and treats for them.

I can’t remember what exactly happened on my first day of becoming a mentor. My head was spinning too much and I think there were moments when I got really confused with the students. At first I thought it was too hard, because some students could not understand what I was saying, while other students didn’t listen. After some time passed, I began to know what I should do when the students did not listen to me. I can’t remember much of what happened, but I am perfectly sure about what I learned that day: Becoming a mentor is not easy. After that day, I really began to respect the work done by teachers.

Seojeong Middle School is part of a unique learning opportunity called The S.J. Mentoring Program. The program’s main objective is to teach our middle school students to learn English by becoming mentors to students in elementary schools. We utilize the teaching experience as a means to actively engage our students in the curriculum material while fostering their communication and leadership skills. The “S.J.” stands for “Senior” and “Junior”; it highlights the roles the students play in the mentoring program, as well as serving as an abbreviation for our school name.

There are 40 students who are voluntarily participating in the program, and they visit two elementary schools once a week to share what they have learned. The students also mentor at the Goyang Youth Center during school vacations. Though the mentors are still learning English, their enthusiasm to share and teach what they know is truly a sight to see. With this invaluable learning experience, I am certain that our students will emerge with the assets necessary to become global leaders and future innovators. 학생들에게 사랑과 꿈을 심어주는 서정중학교

나는 교단에 섰다. 나는 말한다, “안녕, 내 이름은 이민경이야. 나는 서정중학교에 다녀. 모두들 반가워.” 초등학교 학생들이 박수를 친다. 오늘은 특별한 날이다. 내가 배우고 동시에 가르치는 날이다.

나는 서정 멘토링 프로그램에 참여한 학생들 중 한 사람이다. 그것은 내가 아는 것을 초등학생들에게 가르치고 공유하도록 허용하는 좋은 프로그램이다. 서정은 서정 중학교를 의미하고 동시에, 선배와 후배를 상징한다.

서정 멘토링 프로그램은 지원자 프로그램이다. 그 프로그램에 참여한 학생들은 아람 초등학교, 서정 초등학교 그리고 고양 청소년 센터로 간다.

나는 일어난 많은 것을 기억할 수 없지만 내가 그 날 배운 것에 대해서는 확실히 안다: 멘토가 되는 것은 정말 쉽지 않다. 그 날 이후, 나는 선생님들이 하는 일을 존경하기 시작했다.

서정 중학교는 서정 멘토링 프로그램이라는 독특한 배움의 기회를 준다. 그 프로그램의 주 목적은 우리 중학생들이 초등학생들에게 멘토가 됨으로써 영어를 가르치는 것이다.
