Let’s say there are two types of love stories: one is a happily ever after and the other is a tragedy. Which would you consider more appealing? Some people may find that tragic love stories are far more interesting than the ones that have a happy ending. Consider William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. This classic love story about two star-crossed lovers has endured for centuries and was once again adapted into an animated family film. Gnomeo and Juliet was produced in the U.S. and released in Korea a couple of weeks ago. The Teen Times attended the press preview of the movie on April 4. Here is what young moviegoers can expect from this delightful adaptation.

As previous mentioned, Gnomeo and Juliet is loosely based on Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. However, this version is a cheerful, whimsical, and colorful adaptation of the classic. The story unfolds in gardens and the two families wear distinguishing colors, blue and red. The soundtrack, which was composed by legendary artist Elton John, nicely complements the movie’s cheerful tone.

Much acclaimed by the public, the movie came in first in the U.S. box office just three weeks after its release. The director of Gnomeo and Juliet is Kelly Asbury, who previously directed the smash hit, “Shrek 2”. In Korea, the movie received much attention after popular idol stars, including Lee Jun from MBLAQ, Ji-yeon from T-ara, and comedian Jung Ju-ri, agreed to lend their voices for the film. Lee voiced Gnomeo, Ji-yeon was Juliet, and Jung voiced Nanette, a garden frog and Juliet’s best friend.

“Even though I’ve watched so many animated movies from my childhood, I never thought I would become a voice actor,” said Lee at the film’s press conference. “I put a lot of effort to match the tone of my voice with my character’s emotions.” He also expressed his hard work by saying, “I have been busy recording and went abroad once or twice a week. But I practiced often, even in the airplane.”

Ji-yeon said, “This was my first time voice acting but I knew that this is a big part of acting.” She said she focused on trying, “to make a high-pitched voice because my voice is so husky.”

Jung, who provided the film’s comic relief, was the only cast member who had previous experience as a voice actor. She said she tried to reveal a part of herself in the character. “I have been very active and enthusiastic in past relationships and it was helpful to use that when voicing Nanette.”

Gnomeo and Juliet is a fun adaptation of Shakespeare’s tragedy. But will their love survive? Or is it doomed to end in heartbreak? Why not go and see it? It is playing in theaters nationwide.
