When a mega size earthquake of 9.0 magnitude buffeted Japan instantly, it was a given that pretty much all lines of communication would be shut down. Chaos spread to the neighboring nation of South Korea since countless Koreans are currently living in Japan.

For DSP Media, the popular entertainment agency, couldn’t reach members of the popular girl group Kara by phone. The case was similar for many agencies which had their Hallyu stars over in Japan. Luckily for all entertainment firms anxious to know the well being of their stars, their prayers were answered by Kakao Talk, a messenger application for smartphones. Every Hallyu star was fine and alive.

What’s interesting in the midst of catastrophe in Japan is that mobile messenger turned out extremely handy for Koreans staying in Japan and their relatives as phone services were completely cut of due to the aftermath of the quake and tsunami. With Japan’s phone lines drowned, social network services immediately became the major source of information for people wanting updates on the country’s situation.

Internet giant, Google put out a free service titled Person Finder in both Japanese and English to help locate a person listed missing. Through the website, visitors were able to share information about a person and exactly what they are looking for. And of course the application was also available for all smartphones.

Luckily, even though Japan’s Internet lines were affected from the natural disaster, data transfer on mobile messengers were smooth due to the data traveling through an intertwined web that is designed to move traffic to the next free route. The network wasn’t overloaded even when the cellular and fixed ground-line networks rose nearly 90 times with far too many calls being made and clogging up the networks.

One factor to consider is that Japan has built a strong Internet network. Internet intelligence authorities across the globe have uniformly agreed that Japan’s Internet connectivity survived the catastrophic event much better than anyone would have expected.

It has also been found out of approximately 6,000 Japanese network prefixes in the global routing table, only 100 were temporarily withdrawn from service. In essence, Japan’s engineers have built a dense web of domestic and international connectivity which should be applauded for being the richest and most diverse on the planet.

Foreigners with relatives in Japan chose to shoot up an email when dialing the phone didn’t answer their questions. Although mobile phones couldn’t serve their purpose, the Internet allowed the visitors and foreigners staying in Japan to reply to the emails and make contact with their family. Although Japan’s phone lines are still down in such crucial time, Internet communication is doing its job well and right.
