A unique superhero film, which was released on January 27, gained a fair share of popularity over the lunar New Year’s holiday in theaters - The Green Hornet. So, what made people go crazy about the movie? Unlike other superhero movies, it gave a little twist to its characters. The superheroes of the movie are somewhat different from typical almighty superheroes. Seth Rogen and Jay Chou played the main characters in the movie. On January 19, the two actors and the director Michel Gondry visited Korea for a press conference. The Teen Times met them at Hotel Shilla in Seoul to hear what they had to say about the movie.

The Green Hornet was first produced in 1930 in the U.S. as a radio series. Later, the story was adapted to cartoon and TV series and gained incredible popularity in the 1960s. The legendary action star Bruce Lee rose to stardom by acting the role of Kato in TV series in 1966. The series had caught people’s attention by showing splendid action of the naughty superhero. The main plot of the movie is ‘Good vs. Evil.’ One of the main characters, Britt Reid (played by Seth Rogen), is an outlaw who enjoys to party every night. Following the death of his father, who was a journalist with a strong sense of justice, Reid made up his mind to do something meaningful to the society. He teams up with his late dad’s assistant Kato (played by Jay Chou) and they form a masked crime fighting team - the Green Hornet. They fight against the evil power who attempts to destroy the world. TTT: The Green Hornet is very different from the movies that you have directed until now. What made you change your style?

Michel Gondry (Director): Actually, I didn’t choose the movie; the movie chose me. Seth Rogen, the producer, and the hero of the movie came up to me and said that they chose me as the director.

TTT: Could you tell us about the characters you played in the movie? 

Jay Chou (Actor): I played Kato. He has the charms of a mysterious legendary hero but unlike other superheroes with special abilities and supernatural powers, Kato is normal, just like any ordinary person. When I was a young boy, I also dreamed of becoming a superhero. I feel happy to make my dream come true through this movie and fight against the evil.

Seth Rogen (Actor): Superheroes are usually moral, powerful, and heroic. However, our movie is different. The characters of the movie mature as time passes and you can see them transform into superheroes little by little. My character Britt Reid is a very good example. At first, the reckless man doesn’t care about morality. However, he transfigures into a heroic character as he overcomes conflict with Kato.

TTT: We have a question for Seth Rogen. Other than acting, you also participated in producing and script writing in this movie. What made you participate in all these three?

Seth Rogen: My playwright partner and I are huge fans of superhero movies. Just watching these movies was not good enough for us and we wanted to create an original superhero movie of our own. Man, it was a hard process, but once the cameras were on, we had a ball!

TTT: Do you have any last words that you would like to say to your Korean fans?

Michel Gondry: I wish you would find this movie amusing. To tell you the truth, many American and European movies were influenced by Asian movies. This movie shows how Asian movies effected Western cinema. It is an honor to take part in such cultural exchange and I believe it will enhance the movie industry.

Jay Chou: I hope many people will enjoy The Green Hornet. I may not be a muscular superhero, but there are lots of fascinating action scenes that will catch your eye.

Seth Rogen: It is a pleasure to visit Korea and meet my fans. I hope to come here again in the near future!
