In our world of constantly updated technology, where digital devices become obsolete the moment they are released, it seems rather difficult to get excited about paper. Yet the great Chinese invention is still going strong after 1900 years and what’s more it could be just around the corner from a major upgrade. Specifically, the future could lie in digital paper.

We live in a world where paper is an indispensable part of our lives. Every year hundreds of millions of tons of paper are consumed. Naturally, this is nothing new; for nearly two millennia ink on paper has been the only way to record and display words and images. Even today, paper is still the cheapest and quickest medium compared with computer tablets and smart phones. However, once paper is printed on it’s very hard to change and carrying around large amounts of paper - such as books - is really impractical. Yet scientists say they are very close to a revolutionary technology that could replace paper. It’s called electronic ink. So what is it and how does it work?
 
At first a bottle of electronic ink may look just like regular ink, but it is in fact quite different. This because the ink contains millions of tiny moving parts. The ink can be applied to any surface just like traditional ink, yet once applied to a page the ink can work like a computer screen. The ink can then be connected to microelectronic processes in the paper itself that can send an electrical charge. This results in words or images being created!

If that wasn’t exciting enough the next part is even better; due to an incredibly complex design the words and images on the paper can be changed to display different things. Imagine being able to read an eBook on paper - that is electronic ink! Currently the ink only works with blue ink on a white background, but companies such as Xerox are doing research into multi-color displays.

By combining this with the latest micro circuit technology, which allows circuit boards to be paper thin, publishing companies have an exciting new product just around the corner. For instance, a company called E Ink has taken the lead in developing digital books by using tiny plastic transistors printed onto a page.

It is hoped that in the near future we will have products that can typeset themselves. Therefore you could have USB storage in the spine of a book and be able to select different titles that you want to read. Then, as if by magic the words will appear on the page before you, written in digital ink. When you want to read a different book it will be as simple as loading a new file.

Obviously a fair amount of research and development is needed before electronic ink is ready to retail. Nevertheless, it is almost certain that paper is going to take over the world all over again.

분명한 건 전자 잉크가 판매되기 전에 많은 연구와 발전이 요구된다. 그럼에도 불구하고, 종이가 전 세계적으로 다시 이어 받고 있음이 거의 확실하다.
