Glove: Against All Odds

Director Kang Woo-suk is back to Chungmu-ro with his heart touching movie Glove, based on the true story of Korea’s very first hearing impaired baseball team. On January 10, The Teen Times was fortunate enough to catch the press preview of one of the most anticipated movies of 2011, held at Wangsimni CGV.

The movie Glove is about a baseball team consisting of hearing impaired athletes, fighting their disabilities and endlessly challenging themselves for their one and only passion; baseball.The movie also looks at their temporary coach, a top-notch pitcher with a reputation as a troublemaker, who only takes the position to rehabilitate his image. The film intends to overwhelm the audience with its broad location scale, as it frequently crosses the borders from province to province.


 

For this movie, the creative team had to survey 80 different baseball stadiums and other locations to find the perfect five stadiums to match the scenes in the movie. Not only did the creative team have a tough time, but the actors also had to improvise as they learnt other skills besides acting. The 10 promising new actors had to be trained by a real baseball coach for six months to make the baseball game seem realistic. Also, because the movie was based around a hearing impaired baseball team all of the actors had to practice and be extra fluent in sign language. All of these efforts add up to make Glove both a well-made and deeply touching movie.

Here is what the director and some of the main actors had to say about the movie:

Kang Woo-suk (DIRECTOR): “I realized how highly strung I was after finishing Moss. It was a very fierce and tense movie. I wanted to go back and direct heartwarming movies and cure myself. Glove brought me back to my zero space. I had a wonderful time directing the movie and I hope to share the laughter and warmth with the audience.”

Jung Jae-young (Kim Sang-nam, a top-notch pitcher trying to renew his image): “I usually feel awkward about watching my movies, but this time I was curious to see how it would look on screen. The baseball players are the real main characters of this movie. Deep down in my heart, I was applauding loudly for them. I had the best time playing my character.”

You Sun (Na Ju-won, team manager and music teacher of Sungsim School) “This was my first time to act out such a bright and lively character. Also, I admit I had no knowledge of baseball and sign language before filming this movie. These were just some of the difficulties I had to solve through continuous practice and study. Now, you could say I am a baseball addict!”

Kim Hye-sung, Jang Ki-beom, Lee Hyun-woo (members of the baseball team): “The movie required a lot of teamwork so we began to hang out even when we weren’t shooting. You could say we became best friends through this movie. It was hard work, training and acting at the same time, but we gave it our best. I hope many come to see the movie.”


Will Glove be able to touch the hearts of audiences and continue the box office success that other sports movies such as Forever the Moment and National Team achieved? There’s only one way to find out! Let’s go and watch the movie, which has been in cinemas since January 20.

 

글로브: 모든 역경을 딛고 일어서다

강우석 감독이 한국 최초로 청각 장애를 가진 야구팀에 대한 실화에 바탕을 둔 가슴 따뜻한 영화 글로브로 충무로로 돌아왔다. 1월 10일, 틴타임즈는 CGV 왕십리에서 열린 2011년 가장 기대를 모으는 영화 중 하나인 글로브 시사회에 참석하는 행운을 안았다.

영화 글로브는 청각 장애인들로 구성된 야구팀 선수들이 그들의 장애와 싸우며 끊임 없이 열정을 위해 도전하는 이야기다. 그 영화는 또한 말썽꾼으로 명성 높은 일류 투수인 임시 감독에 대해 보여주는데, 그는 오로지 그의 이미지 회복에만 신경을 쓴다.
영화는 여러 지역을 다니며 국경을 넘는 광대한 장소 스케일로 관중들을 제압한다.

이 영화를 위해, 그 팀은 80개의 야구 경기장과, 이 영화와 가장 잘 어울리는 다섯 개의 완벽한 구장을 발견하기 위해 조사해야 했다. 그 팀은 힘든 시간을 가졌을 뿐 아니라, 배우들도 연기 이외에 다른 기술을 배워야 했다.


10명의 유망한 배우들은 야구 경기를 현실적으로 보이게 하기 위해 실제로 야구 코치에 의해 6개월간 훈련 받아야 했다. 또한, 그 영화는 청각장애 야구팀에 대한 이야기에 기초하고 있어서 모든 배우들은 유창한 수화를 위해 연습해야 했다.


이 모든 노력들이 더해져 아주 감동적이고 잘 만들어진 영화 글로브가 만들어졌다.
배우와 감독이 한 이야기는 아래와 같다.

강우석(감독): 난 영화 이끼를 마친 후 내가 얼마나 강한지 깨달았다. 그것은 굉장히 격렬하고 긴장감 넘치는 영화였다. 다시 돌아가 가슴 따뜻한 영화를 만들고 내 자신을 돌보고 싶었다. 글로브는 나를 아무것도 없는 지점으로 데려갔다.

나는 영화를 연출하면서 멋진 시간을 가졌고 관중들과 웃음과 따뜻함을 나누길 바란다.

정재영 (김상남, 이미지를 회복하고 싶어하는 일류 투수)
나는 대체로 내가 나온 영화를 보면 이상하다, 그렇지만 이번에는 어떻게 영화에 나올지 궁금하다. 야구 선수들은 이 영화의 진정한 주인공이다.


내 가슴 깊숙한 곳에, 그들을 위해 박수 갈채를 보내고 있었다.
나는 나의 캐릭터를 연기하며 최고의 시간을 보냈다.

유선 (나주원, 성심 학교 음악 교사이자 팀 메니저)
밝고 명랑한 캐릭터를 연기하기는 처음이다. 또한, 나는 이 영화를 촬영하기 전에는 야구와 수화에 대해 전혀 몰랐다. 이러한 것들이 연습하고 연구하는 것을 통해 풀었어야 했을 어려운 점들이었다. 지금 나는 야구 중독이라고까지 말할 수 잇다!

“그 영화는 많은 팀워크를 필요로 했기 때문에 우리는 영화 촬영을 하지 않을 때에도 어울려야 했다. 이 영화를 통해 우리는 진정한 친구가 되었다고 말할 수 있을 것 같다.
훈련과 연기를 동시에 하는 어려운 시간이었지만, 우리는 최선을 다했다.
많은 분들이 이 영화를 즐겁게 보시길 바란다.
