The year of the Tiger has been full of ups and downs, both for the nation and the whole world; from sporting triumphs to national tragedies and natural disasters to victories for human rights. Without a doubt 2011 will have a lot more surprises in store for us, but before we embark on another adventure let’s look back at some of the major headlines of 2010.

The Cheonan
On March 26 the ROKS Cheonan of the South Korean Navy split in two and sunk in the West Sea. The Cheonan was carrying 104 South Korean sailors and the sinking killed 46 of the ship’s crew. In May an international investigation blamed a North Korean torpedo for the sinking, which the communist hermit nation denied.

BP Oil Spill
On April 20 an explosion took place on the Deepwater Horizon oil drilling platform in the Gulf of Mexico. The blast killed 11 workers but also caused oil to gush from the broken well head on to the ocean floor, causing the biggest oil spill in history. BP, the operator of the oil rig, scrambled to fix the disaster with a series of failed solutions. After a few months the leak was finally stopped after extensive damage had been done to the waters and the coastline.

Volcanic Ash Over Europe
In April a volcanic eruption beneath Eyjafjallajokull, an ice cap in Iceland, sent ash high into the atmosphere disrupting all air traffic across northern and western Europe and for a time grounding practically all aircraft.

FIFA World Cup 2010
From June 11 to July 11 the World Cup was held in South Africa. South Korea’s team started well but eventually lost out to Argentina, who themselves later dropped out. The competition was finally won by Spain, yet the event will probably best be remembered for introducing the world to possibly the most annoying instrument ever: the vuvuzela.

Chilean Miners
On August 5 an accident occurred at the San Jose copper-gold mine in Chile. The accident left 33 men trapped 700 meters below ground and there were fears that all of the men might have died. However, rescuers found that all the men were alive. The men survived underground for a record 69 days and all 33 were rescued and brought to the surface on October 13.

Seoul G20 Summit
The 2010 Seoul G20 Summit was held from November 11?12. As the fifth meeting of the G20 heads of government to discuss the global financial system and the world economy, it was the first time a non-G8 nation had hosted a G-20 Leaders Summit, being a historical moment for the nation. The nation’s standing was raised a notch in the eyes of the world as a result.

The 2010 Asian Games
The 2010 Asian Games (or Asiad) were held in Guangzhou, China between November 12 and November 27. Guangzhou was the second Chinese city to host the Games, after Beijing in 1990. While China took the most medals with 416 in total, including 199 gold, South Korea took home 232 medals including 76 gold, giving the nation the No.2 overall spot.

Aung San Suu Kyi Released
Burmese opposition politician Aung San Suu Kyi was released from her house arrest on November 13, suggesting that the Burmese government might be prepared to make some concessions towards political freedom in the South East Asian nation.

Liu Xiaobo Awarded Nobel Prize
Despite widespread protests from the Chinese regime the 2010 Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to imprisoned Chinese human rights activist Liu Xiaobo. Liu was a leader in the Tiananmen Square protests of 1989 and has fought hard for human rights despite being imprisoned and suppressed by the Chinese authorities. Although writing the Charter 08 manifesto resulted in 11 years in prison for the activist it also won Liu the Nobel Prize and the attention of the world.

Wikileaks Cable Release
On November 28 the whistleblowing website WikiLeaks began releasing a collection of more than 250,000 American diplomatic cables, including 100,000 marked “secret” or “confidential”.In the aftermath Wikileaks founder Julian Assange became one of the most talked about men on the planet.

천안함
3월26일 남한 해군의 천안함이 서해에서 두 동강이 난 채 침몰했다. 천안함에는 104명의 남한 해군들이 타고 있었는데, 46명이 사망했다. 5월에 행해진 국제적 조사에 의하면, 북한의 어뢰가 침몰의 원인이었는데, 은둔국가인 북한은 이를 부인했다.

영국의 BP 기름 유출 사건
4월 20일 멕시코만에서 석유 채굴 플랫폼에서 한 폭파사고가 발생했다. 그 폭파로 11명의 인부가 사망했지만 또한 그로 인해 해저면에 기름이 쏟아져 나와 역사상 가장 큰 기름 유출 사건이 되었다. 석유굴착회사인 BP는 여러 가지 잘못된 방법을 동원하여 그 재난을 바로잡으려 허둥댔다. 몇 달 후 광범위한 피해가 바다와 해안에 발생한 후 그 유출은 멈추었다.

유럽을 덮은 화산재
4월, 아이슬란드의 만년설 Eyjafjallajokull아래에서 화산 폭발이 일어나 북유럽과 서유럽 항공을 덮어 비행교통을 방해해 얼마간 모든 비행기가 실제적으로 비행 금지조치를 당했다.

FIFA 월드컵 2010
6월 11일부터 7월 11일까지 남아프리카에서 월드컵이 열렸다. 남한 팀은 시작은 좋았지만 결국 아르헨티나에 패배했는데, 아르헨티나도 결국 나중에는 패배했다. 결국 스페인이 우승했는데, 이번 월드컵은 아마도 전 세계에 가장 시끄러운 악기인 부부젤라를 알릴 수 있었던 행사로 기억될 것이다.

칠레 광부
8월 5일, 칠레에 있는 San Jose 광산에서 사고가 났다. 그 사건으로 33명의 광부가 700미터 지하에 갇혀서 모두가 죽었을지 모른다는 공포감에 휩싸였다. 그러나, 구조원들은 모든 사람들이 살아있다는 것을 발견했다. 그들은 69일 동안 지하에서 생존했으며, 33명은 모두 구조되어 10월 13일 지상으로 구조되었다.

서울 G20회담

2010 아시안 게임
2010 아시안게임이 중국 광저우에서 11월 12일부터 27일까지 개최되었다. 광저우는 1990년 베이징 이후로 게임을 주최하는 두 번째 중국 도시가 되었다. 중국이 199개의 금메달을 포함 416개로 가장 많은 메달을 획득한 반면, 남한은 76개의 금메달을 포함하여 232개의 메달을 획득하여 총점으로 2위를 했다.

아웅상 수지 가택연금 해지
버마의 야당 정치인 아웅산 수지가 11월 13일 가택연금에서 풀려났다. 이는 버마 정부가 동남아시아 국가에서 정치적 자유에 대해 양보를 할 준비가 되어있을지 모른다는 것을 의미한다.

류 샤오보 노벨상 수상
