Modern art refers to art work that was produced between the 1860s and the 1970s. Modern art is considered somewhat different from traditional art when it comes to the style of expression; experimental modern artists dropped traditional ways of making art in the spirit of experimentation and seeing the nature of materials in new and different ways. This winter you can trace and experience the history of Western modern art in Seoul as the Deoksugung Museum is now hosting ‘Picasso and Modern Art: The Agony and the Passion’ until March 1, 2011.

The exhibition revolves mainly around the work of Spanish artist Pablo Picasso as well as the 20th century German Expressionists, who played a crucial role in the development of modern art. All the pieces are picked from the Albertina Museum in Vienna, Austria, ranging from paintings to sculptures to sketches dated from the late 19th century to the late 20th century. This is the first time the Albertina Museum collection has ever travelled to Asia.

The atmosphere of the early 20th century, which is the main backdrop of modern art, was unstable and volatile due to the fierce conflicts for possession of the colonies between the powerful European nations as well as the outbreak of the World Wars. The dreary situation led to an overflowing of inhumanity in societies and artists of the time perceived the world with both loneliness and passion. Their source of inspiration could be found in their lives, and expressing their inner feelings became the main task of their work.

Modern art is not limited to beautifully and harmoniously mimicking and reproducing nature, which traditional arts sought to achieve. Rather, modern artists put emphasis on depicting things, people or objects with their very own perspective of seeing, by distorting and abstracting their subjects.

Take the Fauvism style of modern art for example(Fauvism means ‘the wild beast’ in French); the Fauvist painters used strong primary colors which boldly contrasted with each other as opposed to naturally harmonizing together, representing how in nature objects can be recreated in a whole different way by painters. Established Fauvism artists include Henri Matisse and Kees van Dongen.

The exhibition at the Deoksugung Museum is divided into four categories; the passion towards the inner side, the anxiety of the times, the search for the pure, and the agony and the passion. The work of many great artists is displayed under these four themes; Pablo Picasso, who is one of the most recognizable figures in modern art, Italian artist Amedeo Modigliani who tried to draw the lonely soul of people, Marc Chagall who depicted his experiences of the youth in bizarre and fantastic ways, the representative Fauvist painter Henri Matisse, and the rare landscape paintings of Edvard Munch. 피카소와 모던 아트: 고뇌와 열정

모던 아트는 1860년대와 1970년대 사이에 만들어진 예술 작품을 일컫는다. 모던 아트는 표현 스타일에 있어서 전통적인 예술과 다소 다르다; 실험적인 현대 예술가들은 실험정신에 입각하여 물질의 성질을 새롭고 다른 방법으로 보며 예술품을 만들어내는 전통적인 방법과 관계를 끊었다. 올 겨울 당신은 덕수궁 미술관에서 2011년 3월 1일까지 개최하는 있는 ‘피카소와 모던 아트전: 고뇌와 열정’에서 서양 미술의 역사를 따라가보고 경험할 수 있을 것이다.

전시회는 주로 20세기 현대 미술의 발전에 중요한 역할을 한 독일 표현주의자뿐 아니라 스페인의 미술가 파블로 피카소의 작품을 중심으로 한다. 모든 작품들은 오스트리아 비엔나의 알베티나 박물관 소장품인데, 19세기 말에서 20세기 말에 이르는 그림에서 조각품 그리고 스케치에 이른다. 이것은 알베티나 박물관 작품들이 아시아를 여행하는 첫 번째이다.

모던 아트의 주요 배경인 20세기 초의 분위기는 강력한 세계 대전의 발발뿐 아니라 유럽 열강의 식민지 소유 분쟁으로 불안정하고 변덕스러웠다. 그 음울한 상황은 수 많은 비인간적 행위들을 초래했고 그 시대의 예술가들은 세상을 외로움과 열정의 세계로 인지했다. 그들의 영감의 원천은 그들 삶에서 발견될 수 있었고, 내면적 영감들은 그들 작품의 주요 과업이 되었다.

현대 미술은 전통적인 예술품이 추구하듯이 아름답고 조화롭게 자연을 흉내 내고 재생하고 복제하는 것에 한정되어 있지 않다. 오히려, 현대 미술가들은 사물이나, 사람들 또는 사물을 왜곡시키거나 추상화시키며 그들만의 시각으로 보는 사물을 묘사하는 데 중점을 둔다.

현대 미술의 야수파의 스타일을 예로 들어보자 (야수파는 프랑스 말로 ‘야수’를 뜻한다.); 야수파는 어떻게 자연의 사물들이 그리는 사람에 의해 전혀 다른 방법으로 재 창조 될 수 있는지 나타내며, 자연스럽게 함께 조화를 이루는 것과 대조적으로 대담하게 강한 원색을 사용했다. 저명한 야수파 화가에는 앙리 마티스, 키스반 동겐이 있다. 덕수궁 박물관 전시는 네 개의 카테고리로 나뉜다; 내면으로부터의 열정, 시대의 고뇌, 순수함을 찾아서, 고뇌와 열정이다.
