Since 2006, the website WikiLeaks has made a name for itself by publishing secret information.Everything that governments want covered up is made public via their website, including cases of police brutality and war crimes. Now it seems the U.S. government is getting very anxious after it was recently announced that the site will publish information on the Iraq War.

It has been noted that whatever the U.S. government is very nervous over what it expects the leak to be, represented by the fact the U.S. military has put together a 120-member team to deal with the issue. WikiLeaks is expected to go ahead with the publication of some 400,000 Iraq war documents which includes details of battles and Iraqi civilians killed in the fighting. The Pentagon has said it is afraid this potentially damaging information could be released and wants the documents back as a result.

In July of this year WikiLeaks published over 70,000 documents describing events that took place in the Afghan war. Yet this latest batch will apparently make the files on Afghanistan look rather insignificant. The U.S. military are attempting to assess what damage the release of these files could do but as the Pentagon cannot predict when the leak will happen they are maintaining a tight watch on the WikiLeaks site. However some sources said the leak could actually come later this month.

Colonel David Lapan of the U.S. military is worried that the leak could cause big problems, especially if certain information isn’t removed. “It’s not as simple as just taking out names. There are other things and documents that aren’t names that are potentially damaging,” he said, adding that the files came from “an Iraq-based database”.

When the documents on the Afghan war were released to the public in July the U.S. military warned that it would result in the deaths of soldiers and civilians because the documents included the names of locals who had helped the military. Yet on the other hand U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates was quick to brush off the scope of the July leak, claiming the release was not of great significance. Nevertheless there are evidently fears about this upcoming leak and it is felt it could damage the ability of the U.S. to share information with intelligence agencies from other nations.

At the time of writing the WikiLeaks website was offline due to “scheduled maintenance”, while WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, an Australian journalist and activist, is being investigated in Sweden over a sex crime allegation .Mr. Assange stated that these allegations were false, being part of an effort to discredit him in order to divert attention from the material the site was publishing. Meanwhile a U.S. army intelligence analyst is currently in custody over allegations that he was responsible for the Afghan leak.

WikiLeaks is an international network that anonymously publishes information and documents submitted by users. Within a year of its 2006 launch the site boasted a database of 1.2 million documents and despite the controversy over releasing secret documents the site has won a number of awards and the New York Daily News listed WikiLeaks as the No.1 site in its ranking of websites that could totally change the news.
