Last winter the mega smash-hit spy drama IRIS made a huge splash in Korea and Japan. This winter a spinoff of the popular drama titled ATHENA: Goddess of War is once again set to keep viewers on the edge of their seats. On August 30 a showcase for the new drama was held in Lotteworld in Jamsil, Seoul. Two of The Teen Times staff reporters grabbed the opportunity to take a look at this great new show.

Before the preview even started the venue was jammed full with high spirited journalists and thrilled fans. The show opened with the theme song ‘I Love You’ by Park Hyo-shin, which has already taken the top spot in the nation’s music charts. Soon after, the audiences were overwhelmed by the 10 minutes of promotion video clips, featuring spectacular scenery filmed in Italy and actors featured in intense, second to none action as the scenes unfolded.

Athena shares a similar outline with the plot of IRIS, which was based around a thrilling tale of terrorism, spies and secret agents from South and North Korea. However Athena’s story has a new spin to it, with detailed themes related to the pressing global issue of energy wars. The plot is based around a conflict between South Korea and Athena, a secretive group which controls the world’s oil market, exercising its influence over the world with humongous amount of money. In the story South Korea invents a new type of nuclear energy named TWR and the story evolves as Athena tries to deter South Korea’s efforts with their nuclear invention.

One of the highlights of Athena is its exotic and eye-catching scenery. In order to provide the backdrops filming took place in six countries including Italy, Switzerland, Singapore and New Zealand. On top of that its star-studded cast boasts the likes of Jung Woo-sung, Cha Seung-won, Su-ae, Lee Ji-ah, Kim Min-jong, and Choi Si-won.

Amid unceasing screams and applause from the audience, six of the main actors and actresses appeared on the stage and talked about the new drama. Jung Woo-sung plays the main character of a NTS special agent. “I injured my knee and got my hands torn,” he said of the filming process. Jung also expressed a responsibility for the show’s success due to the quality of its predecessor IRIS. “After watching IRIS I felt burdened, so during shooting I couldn’t be easily satisfied; I wanted to do better,” he said. Jung’s part is expected to grab viewer’s attention because this will be his comeback drama role after 15 years.

Meanwhile Su-ae revealed her feelings about the kiss scene with Jung. “I have never experienced such a kiss scene. Caught up in filming, I didn’t know it had dawned already,” she said. In response to this Jung gave a modest response. “I tried to give her a good memory as it was her first kiss scene after making her debut,” he said, to which the audience responded with cheering and applause. Su-ae’s part as the female main character will mean she will be involved in romantic entanglements with the other main characters, Jung and Cha Seung-won, who plays a CIA agent and has high hopes for the drama.“I want Athena to win popular acclaim and high ratings,” he said.

Through depicting espionage activities on not just the Korean peninsula but on a global stage, Athena is expected to have viewers glued to their TV sets. However while the show seems already guaranteed for success due to its connection to IRIS, it is questionable whether it can renew the records set by its predecessor. With upcoming filming scheduled in the Dotori province of Japan, Athena is set to hit the airwaves at the end of this year on SBS.

아테나: 첩보영화의 새로운 국면

지난 겨울 크게 히트한 첩보 드라마 아이리스가 한국과 일본에서 크게 각광을 받았다. 이번 겨울 아이리스의 스핀오프작 ‘아테나: 전쟁의 여신’이 다시 한번 시청자들의 관심을 사로잡을 예정이다. 8월 30일 서울 잠실 롯데월드에서 아테나 쇼케이스가 열렸다. 틴타임즈의 두 명의 기자는 이 대단한 쇼를 관람할 기회를 잡았다.

시사회가 시작하기 전, 그곳은 활기 넘치는 언론인들과 열띤 관객들로 가득 찼다. 톱 가수 박효신의 드라마 OST ‘아이 러브 유’의 열창으로 쇼는 시작되었다. 곧, 관객들은 이탈리아에서 촬영된 멋진 광경과, 배우들의 강렬하고 둘째가라면 서러운 액션 장면이 펼쳐진 10분짜리 프로모션 비디오 영상에 압도당했다.

아테나는 스릴 넘치는 테러리즘과, 첩보원들 그리고 남북한의 비밀 요원들을 기본으로 하는 아이리스의 구성과 비슷한 구조를 가지고 있다. 그러나 아테나의 스토리는 에너지 전쟁이라는 긴급한 세계문제에 관한 상세한 주제를 더했다. 그 구성은 남한과 막대한 자금력으로 세계에 영향력을 행사하며 세계 오일 시장을 조정하는 비밀 단체인 아테나간의 충돌을 기본 골격으로 한다. 극 중 남한은 TWR이라는 새로운 유형의 핵 에너지를 개발하고, 아테나는 남한의 핵 개발 노력을 저지하려 하면서 이야기는 전개된다.

아테나의 하이라이트 중 하나는 이국적이고 눈길을 사로잡는 배경이다. 그러한 배경을 위해 촬영은 이탈리아, 스위스, 싱가포르 그리고 뉴욕을 포함한 여섯 나라에서 진행되었다. 게다가 정우성, 차승원, 수애, 이지아, 김민종 그리고 최시원과 같은 화려한 캐스팅을 자랑한다.

관객들로부터의 끊임 없는 환호성과 박수 속에서, 여섯 명의 배우들이 무대 위에 올라 아테나에 대해 이야기했다. 정우성은 NTS의 특별 요원으로 주인공을 맡았다. “무릎을 다치고 손이 찢어졌다.” 며 그는 촬영 과정에 대해 말했다. 정우성은 또한 전편인 아이리스로 인한 아테나의 성공에 대한 책임감을 표현하기도 했다. “아이리스를 보고 부담을 느꼈다, 그래서 촬영을 하면서 쉽게 만족할 수 없었다; 더 잘 하고 싶었다,”고 그는 말했다. 정우성은 15년 만의 드라마 컴백을 하는 것이라 시청자들의 큰 관심을 받을 것으로 기대된다.

한편 수애는 정우성과의 키스신에 대해 소감을 밝혔다. “그런 키스신은 경험해 본 적이 없다. 촬영에 몰입해, 동이 트는 줄도 몰랐다.”고 그녀는 말했다. 이에 대해 정우성은 겸손한 반응을 보였다.”그녀가 데뷔 후 첫 키스신이라고 해 좋은 기억을 주기 위해 노력했다,”고 정우성은 말했다. 이에 대해 관객들은 환호와 박수를 보냈다. 여자 주인공인 수애는 극중 에서 남자 주인공인 정우성, 차승원과 복잡한 연애 관계에 휘말릴 예정이다, 차승원은 CIA 비밀 요원 역을 맡았는데 드라마에 대해 큰 기대를 가지고 있다. “아테나가 흥행에 성공하고 높은 시청률을 얻기를 바란다,”고 차승원 말했다.

한반도에서뿐 아니라 세계무대에서 첩보 활동을 그림으로써, 아테나는 시청자들로부터 큰 인기를 얻을 것으로 기대된다. 아이리스와의 관련성으로 이미 흥행을 보증 받은 것처럼 보이지만, 아이리스에 의해 세워진 기록을 갱신할 수 있을지는 의문이다. 일본 도토리현에서의 촬영을 앞두고 있는 아테나는 이번 년도 말 SBS에서 방영될 예정이다.
