When one takes into consideration that South Korea is a leader in the IT industry and has a dominant presence in the world’s technology market, it is quite disappointing to know that it still hasn’t been able to successfully fire up a rocket into space.

The nation’s second attempt to put a domestically made satellite into orbit will take place on June 9 from the space center in Goheung in South Jeolla Province. For the upcoming launch, the same type of Russian rocket, which failed in August of last year, will be given another shot.

The Naro Space Center, located approximately 485 kilometers from Seoul will be prepped for the launch between the hours of 4:30 p.m. and 6:40 p.m. Depending on the weather conditions the launch schedule on June 9 may change.

According to technicians at Naro, the window of opportunity for the launch will be open until June 19. Thus if any technical or weather problems arise, the launch date may be adjusted.

The Ministry of Education, Science and Technology교육과학기술부 is currently consulting Russian engineers to check for the readiness of the rocket. Earlier this month the Russian made rocket arrived at the center and it was attached to the locally built rocket.

The satellite will be attached near the end of May. When the assembly is fully complete, the Russian made first stage booster rocket, locally built second-stage rocket and scientific satellite will be put on the launch pad two days before the blastoff.

According to authorities at Naro Space Center, the launch date was set after a series of consultations with technical experts. Before launch preparations took place the space center had to make sure there wouldn’t be any possible collisions with satellites currently in operation circling the Earth.

To make sure aircraft and ships maintain a safe distance from the rocket, International Civil Aviation Organization국제민간항공기구 and the International Maritime Organization국제해사기구 will be notified of the exact schedule of the rocket launch.

The first attempt for KSLV-1 blast off last august failed due to improper assembly that caused the rocket to veer off course. It became impossible for the satellite to enter orbit. Since 2002 when the nation asked for Russia’s assistance in the space project program, it has spent approximately $451.4 million on building the rocket. Let’s hope for the best results in June.

나로호 발사 재시도

한국이 IT 산업의 선두이고 세계 기술 시장에서 우세한 존재라는 것을 고려할 때, 성공적으로 우주 로켓을 발사할 수 없었다는 것을 알게 돼 상당히 실망적이다.

궤도로 갈 인공 위성을 국내에서 만들기 위한 한국의 두 번째 시도가 전라남도 광주의 우주 센터에서 6월 9일에 일어날 것이다. 곧 있을 발사를 위해, 작년 8월에 실패한 러시아와 같은 종류의 로켓을 다시 한번 시도할 것이다.

서울에서 대략 485km 떨어진 데 위치한 나로 우주 센터는 오후 4시 30분과 6시 40분 사이에 발사가 준비될 것이다. 날씨 상태에 따라, 6월 9일의 발사 일정은 바뀔지도 모른다.

나로호 기술자에 따르면, 발사의 기회의 창은 6월 19일까지 공개될 예정이다. 따라서 만약 기술적인 문제나 날씨 문제가 생긴다면, 그 발사 날짜는 조정될지도 모른다.

교육과학기술부는 현재 로켓이 준비되는 대로 점검하도록 러시아 엔지니어와 상의하고 있다. 이번 달 초에 그 로켓을 만든 러시아 엔지니어가 그 센터에 도착했고 그것은 국내에서 만든 로켓에 부착되었다.

인공위성은 5월 말에 부착될 것이다. 그 조립이 충분히 완벽해지면, 그 러시아 엔지니어는 1단 추진 로켓을 만들고 국내에서 만든 2단 로켓과 과학적 인공위성은 발사하기 이틀 전에 발사대에 놓일 것이다.

나로 우주 센터 당국에 따르면, 발사 날짜는 기술자들과 일련의 협의를 거친 후 결정되었다. 발사 준비를 하기 전 우주 센터는 지구를 돌며 현재 운행 중인 인공위성과 되도록이면 충돌하지 않도록 확실히 해야 한다.

항공기와 배가 로켓으로부터 안전 거리를 반드시 유지하기 위해, 국제민간항공기구와 국제해사기구는 로켓 발사의 정확한 일정을 통보 받을 것이다.

지난 8월에 발사된 KSLV-1의 첫 번째 시도는 그 로켓이 진행 방향을 갑자기 바뀌게 된 부적절한 조립 때문에 실패했다. 인공위성이 궤도로 들어가는 것이 불가능해졌다. 2002년부터 한국이 우주 계획 프로그램에 러시아의 원조를 요청했을 때, 로켓을 만드는 데 대략 4억 5천 1백 4십만 달러를 썼다. 6월에 만족할만한 결과가 나오기 바란다.
