One of the biggest and most controversial government projects is the multi-billion dollar four-river restoration project. Even though the President is a devoted Christian and has often been accused of creating policies that favor the Protestant Church, countless Protestants as well as liberal church-goers are voicing their opposition against the landmark government project.

Rallies are being held by Christian groups in various provinces and the highest decision-making body of the Catholic Church, which has millions of followers has joined the campaign. Speculations say that nearly three million signatures have been collected on a petition against the President’s plan.

Their argument is that the government has not properly assessed the environment. They believe it is outrageous to invest an astronomical amount of tax money into the scheme which is so destructive. The problem is now far too thick for the current administration to digest because the leaders of the four major religious sects in Korea have all criticized the President’s project.

Protestant and Catholics churches, as well as Won Buddhism and the Jogye Order have all joined hands in a rally against the project. When checking the recent polls on the popularity of the President, one will notice that President Lee has enjoyed more popularity than his predecessors did in the past. Unfortunately it’s apparent that things will change as all four religious groups are equally showing signs of disapproval.

To make matters worse a backlash is hurting the President’s popularity because a Grand National Party lawmaker is being accused of trying to oust the liberal head monk of a temple in Seoul. If the allegation turns out to be true that the GNP leader had expressed doubts and referred to the monk as an anti-government leader who is unfit to lead the temple, the current administration could encounter a negative reaction from the public. Of course in response, the GNP leader announced that the accusation was groundless, claiming that he had no association with the monk who leads the temple in the affluent Gangnam area.

For the first time harmony is being born between the two religions. Religious leaders are displaying great virtue by transcending all of the barriers between the different faiths. The latest consensus showed that 22.8 percent of the nation’s population is Buddhist. 18.3 percent accounts for Protestants and 10.9 percent for Catholics. Do the math. The total is more than 50 percent of the entire population.

The question now is simple. With more than half of the nation ganged up against the President’s policy, will President Lee still manage to go through with the project as he planned? A referendum may be in order. One thing is clear, his popularity rating just may hit rock bottom sooner than he realizes.

대통령이 헌신적인 기독교인이고 개신교에게 호의적인 정책을 만들어 비난을 사 왔음에도 불구하고, 기독교인 뿐 아니라 많은 개신교도들도 주요 정부 프로젝트에 반대하는 목소리를 내고 있다.

여러 지역에서 기독교 단체들에 의한 집회가 열리고 있고 수백만 신자와 높은 의사 결정권을 가지고 있는 천주교도 캠페인에 합세했다. 대통령 계획에 반대하는 탄원서에는 거의 3백만 명이 서명했다는 추측도 있다.

그들의 주장은 정부가 환경조사를 적절히 하지 않았다는 것이다.
그들은 천문학적인 양의 세금을 파괴적인 계획에 투자하는 것은 너무나 충격적인 것이라 믿는다.
그 문제는 한국의 4개의 종교 종파가 모두 대통령의 프로젝트를 비판해 왔기 때문에 현정부가 소화 하기에는 너무 벅차다.

원불교와 조계종뿐 아니라 개신교와 천주교도 모두 4대강 프로젝트에 반대하는 집회에 동참했다.
대통령의 인기를 조사한 최근 여론조사를 보면, 이 대통령은 과거 그의 전임자들보다 더 인기가 많다는 것을 알 수 있을 것이다.

불행히도 4개의 종교 단체 모두 똑같이 반대 의사를 보이고 있기 때문에 상황이 바뀔 것이라는 것은 명백하다.
설상가상으로, 한나라당 의원이 서울의 한 주지 스님을 몰아내려고 해 비난을 받고 있어 대통령의 인기에 피해를 주고 있다.
한나라당 원내대표가 그 스님이 주지스님을 하기에는 부적합한 반정부 지도자라고 의문을 제기하고 언급한 혐의가 사실이라고 밝혀지면, 현 정부는 대중으로부터 부정적인 반응에 맞닥뜨릴 수 있다.
물론 이에 대해, 한나라당 원내대표는 강남 부자 사찰의 주지스님과는 아무런 관련이 없다고 주장하며, 혐의는 근거가 없다고 밝혔다.

처음으로 두 종교간 화합이 싹트고 있다.
종교 지도자들은 다른 종교간의 모든 장애물을 초월함으로써 대단한 미덕을 보이고 있다.
최근 여론조사에 의하면 우리나라 인구 중 22.8 퍼센트는 불교이며 18.3 퍼센트는 개신교가 10.9퍼센트는 천주교가 차지했다.
계산해 보면, 전체 인구 중 50퍼센트 이상이다.

문제는 간단하다. 반 이상의 국민이 대통령의 정책에 반대하는데, 대통령은 여전히 계획한 대로 프로젝트를 감행할 것인가?
국민투표가 적합할 지 모른다. 한가지는 확실하다. 그의 인기 순위는 그가 깨닫기도 전에 바닥을 칠지 모른다.
