People fight for a variety of rights. From the right to speak freely to smoking on the street, a society indeed holds diverse opinions for people to argue or agree upon. In the state of California in the U.S., there are gun enthusiasts who believe they should have the right to carry a firearm wherever they go. 

Obviously the idea isn’t something easy for a regular person to digest. Although an individual can obtain the power to protect himself or herself from threats, carrying a deadly weapon can lead to a devastating aftermath. Then again, the people of California accepted the demand of the minority group after attaching safety precautions on the bill for the right to open carry a firearm. The laws are different in other states.

In California, the bill was passed quite some time ago. Now, as long as the weapon is registered in the government’s system, and the carrier holds a license, he or she is free to carry a weapon. Certain establishments in California demanded that they do not want armed individuals walking into their business establishments. Countless restaurants and cafes wanted to create a peaceful environment. It’s so that gun carriers do not make a scene.

However, from the owners’ perspective there was no reason to irritate the general public that doesn’t carry a weapon of any kind. At a time when the voice of gun control advocates are getting louder than ever, there is now only one place where gun enthusiasts are welcome. It is Starbucks Coffee.

Perhaps Starbucks is a cultural leader and wants to protect the rights of the minority. Yet, it’s really difficult to accept that a frappucino and handguns belong together. There’s no doubt the global coffee brand’s image will be tainted for such a decision. From a cultural perspective, the only purpose of a gun is to inflict death and injury. It’s rational for anyone to see a gun and fear violence. Imagine walking into a local Starbucks and noticing a customer enjoying his coffee with a big handgun strapped to his hip. Meanwhile, it is not a western movie but reality.

From a legal point, Starbucks is within its rights to allow gun-toting customers. The Second Amendment in the U.S. Constitution guarantees the people to right to bear arms. Then again, isn’t it logical for the premises to be threat-free? From the eyes of the general public, Starbucks will only be seen as a place for potential caffeine-fueled violence.

It is true that the chances of bullets flying across the baristas are slim to none. People who carry concealed firearms do so with a permit and must pay much attention to the responsibilities surrounding their gun ownership. We need to keep in mind that they aren’t cowboys from the western films that shoot first ask questions later. It is possible that the decision makers at Starbucks considered a gun as a tool. When the police are not around, and the seconds count, it is a tool that can put an end to a crisis.

There have been frequent cases when a lone gunman killed countless innocent people. With such massacres taking place at any moment, it is logical for responsible citizens to carry a weapon. The most natural and inalienable right of any individual is self-defense. So, should an individual not fear the other individual enjoying a latte with a gun strapped to his or her hip? Well, on the flip side of the coin, it is just a fellow citizen prepared to defend himself and maybe even others in a deadly situation. What are your thoughts?
