To preserve human rights and to choose a better way of life, people avidly discuss issues and controversies in our society. There are countless matters of public concern that require rational thinking. And decisions must be made for the well being of the general public. To reach the most appropriate decision, the ones responsible for making the big calls must go through a process called debate. Various sides must be considered and analyzed from different perspectives to see which decision best fits the current affairs. Of course this isn’t an easy process.

Sadly, the proper skills required for rational debating aren’t mandatorily taught in schools. More disappointingly, the importance of debating is fading from the public consciousness. To increase the awareness of debating, the Korea Debating Organization is investing time and money every year with one principle aim to spread the importance of rational debating.

The annual debate competition was once again held in February. This year, the contestants surpassed the expectations of many. They showed that constructive debating is an art and that it can be mastered.

On February 6, 25 teams from 17 high schools across the nation gathered to sign up for the competition. The long day began to sort out 8 winners that would make it to the semi final. The Seoul Campus of Dong-guk University was heating up as the teams warmed up their well prepared skills and put their knowledge of debate to the test. The National Schools Debating Championship for the Senior Division was hosted by Times Core.

Editorial staff members of The Teen Times were present, and there wasn’t a single staff reporter who wasn’t surprised by the contestants’ performances. They were articulate, highly competitive and wise when it came to discussing various controversial issues.

Considering the fact that all of the contestants weren’t aware of any of the discussion topics before the competition was something that surprised many because no single debater lacked knowledge on the various topics. Like all competitions there were winners and losers. After five rounds given to each team, the top 8 were selected. It wasn’t easy for the judges, and the task was about to get even more difficult as day two was just around the corner.

The semi final was more intensive than anyone could imagine. The audiences were stunned by the level of clarity displayed by the debaters. Their interpretation of the most delicate and complex topics were phenomenal. Furthermore they showed a substantial level of understanding of current affairs because they showed objective evidences for and against all arguments.

The winner at this year’s competition was team Ergo composed of Kim Kyu-rie, Chan Keun, and Choi Chang-hyung from Hankuk Academy of Foreign Studies. This was a consecutive win for the school. The Top Speaker award went to Cho Min-kyeong from Hankuk Academy of Foreign Studies. Congratulations to all.

인간의 권리를 지키고 더 나은 삶을 선택하기 위해, 사람들은 우리 사회에서 열정적으로 문제와 논란을 토론한다. 합리적 사고를 필요로 하는 대중적인 관심이 있는 수많은 문제들이 있다. 그리고 결정은 일반 대중의 행복을 위해 이뤄져야만 한다. 가장 적절한 결정에 이르기 위해, 판단에 막대한 책임 있는 사람들은 토론이라고 불리는 과정을 겪어야만 한다. 다양한 의견들이 고려되고 결정이 시사에 가장 적절하다는 것을 보여주기 위해 다양한 관점들로부터 분석되어야 한다. 물론 이는 쉬운 과정이 아니다.

안타깝게도, 합리적 토론에 필요한 적절한 기술은 학교에서 의무적으로 가르치지 않는다. 실망스럽게도, 토론의 중요성은 대중의 의식으로부터 서서히 사라지고 있다. 토론에 대한 인식을 증가시키기 위해, 한국 토론 협회는 합리적 토론의 중요성을 퍼뜨리기 위해 한 가지 원칙으로 매년 시간과 돈을 투자하고 있다.

연례 토론 대회는 2월에 다시 한번 열렸다. 올해, 참가자들은 많은 사람들의 기대를 넘어섰다. 그들은 건설적인 토론은 예술이고 그것은 숙달될 수 있다는 것을 보여주었다.

2월 6일, 한국의 17 곳의 고등학교에서 나온 25개의 팀들이 그 대회에 등록하기 위해 모였다. 그 긴 시간이 준결승에서 대결할 8명의 우승자들을 선별하기 시작되었다. 동국대학교 서울캠퍼스에서 잘 준비된 능력으로 활기를 띠고 그 시험에 토론 지식을 총동원한 팀들로 인해 열기가 뜨거웠다. 전국학생영어토론대회, 고등학생부문은 타임스코어에 의해 주최되었다.
틴타임즈의 편집부 멤버들도 참석했는데, 참가자들의 발표에 놀라지 않은 기자들은 단 한 명도 없었다. 그들은 다양한 논란이 있는 사안들을 토론함에 있어 자신의 생각을 분명히 표현하고, 꽤 경쟁심이 강하고 현명했다.

모든 참가자들은 그 대회 전에 토론 주제에 대해서 전혀 알지 못했다는 사실을 고려하면, 어떤 토론자들도 그 다양한 주제에 지식이 부족하지 않았기 때문에 많은 사람들을 놀라게 했다. 모든 경쟁에서와 마찬가지로, 승리자와 패배자는 있다. 각 팀들에게 주어진 5 라운드를 치른 후, 최고의 8명이 선별되었다. 그것은 심사위원들에게 쉽지 않았고, 그 임무는 대회 기간 이틀이 임박할수록 더 어려워지고 있었다.

준결승은 상상 그 이상으로 더 집중적이었다. 관중들은 그 토론자들이 보여준 명확성에 깜짝 놀랐다. 대부분의 토론자들의 설명은 경이적이었다. 게다가 그들은 객관적인 증거들과 맞설만한 모든 주장들을 보여주었기 때문에 시사에 상당한 이해가 됐음을 보여주었다.

올해의 대회 우승자는 한국외국어대학교 부속 외국어고등학교의 김규리, 김찬근 그리고 최장현으로 구성된 Ergo 팀이었다. 그 학교는 연승이었다. 최고의 말하기 상은 한국외국어대학교 부속 외국어고등학교의 조민경 학생이 받았다. 모두 축하 드립니다.
