The urban heat island (UHI) effect refers to the phenomenon where cities experience much higher temperatures than the surrounding rural areas. The temperature gap is usually more noticeable at night than during the day and can be as much as 10°C.

Cities are made of man-made materials like concrete and asphalt. These materials, especially dark-colored materials, are good at absorbing heat. Cities also lack plants which help keep the air cool through evaporative cooling. Plants transpire water through their leaves which is absorbed by the air.

During this process the air loses some heat, becoming cooler. Another contributing factor is waste heat. This is the excess heat produced by machines like air-conditioners and cars. The net  result? Cities end up absorbing more heat throughout the day and retaining it for a longer period of time than rural areas.

Not all cities, however, experience the UHI effect. Some cities have taken steps to counter the effect by painting buildings a lighter color. Another great idea is the green roof. Green roofs are also known as living roofs because they are made using plants.

도시열섬 효과는 도시가 인근의 지방 지역보다 더 높은 온도를 기록하는 현상을 가리킨다. 온도 차이는 낮보다 저녁에 더욱 분명하며 나타나고 10도 까지 차이가 날 수 있다.

도시들은 콘크리트나 아스팔트와 같은 인공적인 재료로 만들어진다. 이러한 재료들, 특히 색이 어두운 재료들은 열 흡수를 잘 한다. 도시들은 또한 증발 냉각으로 대기를 선선하게 만드는 식물들이 부족하다.

대기는 식물의 잎에서 증산된 수분을 흡수한다. 이 과정 중에 대기는 열을 잃게 되고 시원해진다.

또 하나의 기여 요인은 폐열 이다. 이것은 에어컨과 같은 기계나 자동차에서 생산되는 과잉 열이다. 최종 결과란? 도시는 종일 대량의 열을 흡수하고 지방 지역들보단 그 열을 더욱 오랜 시간 동안 보유한다.

하지만 모든 도시는 도시열섬 효과를 경험하지 않는다. 어는 도시는 그 효과를 대응하기 위해 빌딩들을 연한 색으로 페인트 칠한다. 또 다른 좋은 아이디어는 옥상 녹화이다. 옥상 녹화는 살아있는 지붕이라고 알려져 있는데 식물을 사용해 만들어서 그렇다.
