한강이 얼어붙으려면 최저기온이 영하 10도 이하로 나흘 넘게 지속되고, 낮 최고기온도 영하로 유지돼야 한다. 서울 지역은 지난달 23일부터 차가운 대륙성 고기압의 영향을 받으며 아침 최저기온이 영하 10도 아래로 떨어지는 등 기온이 영하권에 머물렀다. 한파가 계속되면서 한강 주변엔 살얼음(얇게 살짝 언 얼음)이 관측되기도 했지만, 결빙은 열흘 만에 이뤄진 것이다.

‘한강이 얼었다’는 뜻은 한강대교 남단에서 둘째와 넷째 다리 사이 상류 100m 지점이 얼어 물 속을 완전히 들여다볼 수 없을 때를 말한다. 장정구 기상청 총괄예보관 주무관은“이 지점은 서울 ‘노량진나루’ 로, 1906년 이곳에서 처음으로 한강 결빙 관측이 이뤄졌다”며 “당시 한강의 여러 나루 중 노량진 나루가 제일 컸고, 관측이 용이한 지역에 위치해 지금까지도 한강 결빙 기준 지점으로 삼고 있다”고 말했다. 소년조선일보 1월 2일자 1면

<영어 news> This winter has been a chilly one as Seoul is in the middle of its second cold snap of the season. The Meteorological Agency of Korea has already observed ice on the Hangang an occurrence that doesn’t usually happen this early in the season.

“The ice seen on the Hangang is a little surprising and comes about 11 days earlier than usual.” said a spokesmen for the Meteorological Agency.

If the surface water of the Han River hovers around minus 10 degrees Celsius for a period of longer than four days, ice starts to form. Since October 23 of last year, Seoul has been under the influence of high continental atmospheric pressures which has driven temperatures down to below minus 10 degrees in the morning and even colder at night.

Currently, there are only traces of frozen ice on the river. It can take up to ten days of sub-zero temperatures for a solid ice covering to occur. For the river to be classified as ‘frozen’, several upstream stretches of the Han must be so solid that the ice is no longer translucent.

Meteorological forecasters claim the first official river ice observations took place in 1906 at the ‘Noryangjin ferry’site.“ Since that time, this point is where first-ice observations are always made. It’s a great reference point.”one forecaster pointed out.
