15일(현지 시각) 미국 일간지 USA투데 이는 미국 어린이들이 산타클로스 할아버지 앞으로 보낸 편지를 분류하는 미 우정공사(USPS) 직원들의 말을 토대로 이같이 전했다.

미국 전역의 우체국에선 매년‘산타 작전(OperationSanta)’을 펼친다. 저소득층 어린이들이 산타에게 보낸 편지를 독지가(篤志家₩자선활동을 하는 사람)에 게 전해 어린이들이 원하는 선물과 답장을 받을 수 있도록 하는 프로그램이다.

이 작업에 15년째 참여하고 있는 피터 폰테나 매니저는“올해는 생필품을 선물로 원하는 어린이가 크게 늘었다”며“한 소녀는 자기 선물 대신 엄마의 겨울코트를 보내달라고 쓰기도 했다”고 밝혔다.

[영어 news] The recession in the United States might be officially over, but its effects are still being felt. According to USA Today, many poor American children decided that they didn’t want toys and video games this year.

Instead, they wrote letters to Santa Claus asking for winter coats and school supplies. Luckily, many of them had their letters answered.

Every year, post offices across the country have participated in a program called ‘Operation Santa Claus’.

The aim of the program is to collect presents and gifts for low-income and underprivileged children. Volunteers register with the USPS and answer “Dear Santa”letters that are sent to the post office by needy children. Volunteers are encouraged to send necessities like clothing, school supplies and other similar items.

Peter Pontena has been involved in the program for the past fifteen years.

“Due to the economy, more kids are asking for basic necessities. It’s been difficult this year because we’ve had fewer volunteers than usual. Most people just don’t have enough extra money to buy gifts for others,”he said.

Even though hundreds of thousands of people participated in this year’s ‘Letters to Santa’campaign, about half of the poor children who wrote letters did not receive any gifts.
