[한글 news] 광저우 아시안게임의 감동은 아직 끝나지 않았다. 2010 광저우 장애인아시안게임이 오는 12일 중국 광저우 아오티 주경기장에서 막을 올리기 때문. 이번 대회는 처음으로 비장애인 아시안게임대회와 통합돼 같은 곳에서 치러진다. 명칭도 아시아·태평양 경기대회에서 장애인아시안게임으로 바뀌었다.

오는 19일까지 8일간 치러지는 이번 대회엔 아시아 45개국 5500여 명이 참가해 18개 종목에서 기량을 겨룬다. 우리나라는 전 종목에 선수 198명을 포함, 총 300명의 선수단을 파견했다.

지난 2006년 말레이시아 쿠알라룸푸르 아시아·태평양 경기대회에서 종합 3위에 올랐던 한국은 이번 대회에서도 금35·은24·동56개의 메달을 목표로 3위를 지켜내겠다는 계획이다. 개최국인 중국의 독주(獨走·승부를 다투는 일에서 다른 경쟁 상대를 뒤로 떼어놓고 혼자 앞서 나감)가 예상되는 가운데 태국·한국·일본 등의 순위 싸움이 치열할 것으로 전망된다.

대회를 앞두고 경기 이천장애인체육종합훈련원에서 강도 높은 훈련을 소화한 대표팀은 사격·양궁·탁구·배드민턴·육상·수영 등에서 금메달을 기대하고 있다. 최고의 메달밭은 사격이다. 2008 베이징 장애인올림픽 금메달리스트인 박세균(39세)과 이윤리(36세)를 앞세워 12개 중 7개의 금메달을 노리고 있다.

올해 장애인 전국체전에서 5관왕을 거머쥔 수영의 김지은(27세)과 2008 베이징 장애인올림픽 수영 종목에서 은메달을 목에 건 민병언(25세), 육상의 대들보 홍석만(34세) 등 장애인 스포츠 대표 주자들의 활약도 기대를 모은다. 장춘배 선수단장은 지난 8일 광저우로 출국하기 전 인천공항에서 “선수들이 그동안 갈고 닦은 실력을 최대한 발휘해 국민들의 성원에 보답하겠다”고 말했다.

[영어 news] Though the Guangzhou Asian Games are over, the Asian Para Games are approaching and athletes are preparing for the events. The Games kick off in Guangzhou at the Aoti Main Stadium on Dec. 12 which is the same place the main Asian Games events were also held. The event’s name was shortened this year from the Asia Pacific Para Games to the Asia Para Games.

The competition will feature 5,500 athletes from 45 countries competing in 18 events for eight straight days. Korea will send some 300 athletes. In 2006 during the Malaysia Para Games, Korea placed third place. This year Korea is hoping for another third place finish with 35 gold medals, 24 silver medals and 66 bronze. Competition for second and third place is expected to be very tough this year between Korea, Japan and Thailand as host nation China is expected to secure first place.

In order to train for the games, Korean national team athletes worked very hard at Icheon Para Athletes Training center in Gyeonggi Province. The athletes trained here have chances to win gold in the air pistol, archery, table tennis, badminton, running and swimming competitions.

Gold medal winners Park Sae-kyun and Lee Yoon-lee from the 2008 Beijing Para Games, are hoping to pick up as many seven gold medals out of twelve at this year in the air pistol events. Also in the gold medal running, are swimmers Kim Ji-eun who won five gold medals during a Korean national event and Min Byeong-eun who won silver medal at the Beijing Para Games. Korea is also expecting medals from Hong Seok-man in running.

Jang Choon-bae, head coach of the Korean National team, said, “We will honor our nation by doing our best to represent our country well.”
