A woman went to help a neighbor and told her son and daughter, “While I’m away, be very careful not to open the door to any strangers.”

She helped her neighbor in his field all day and earned some millet to make pancakes with. On her way back home, the woman was stopped by a fierce tiger.

“Give me something to eat,” the tiger said, “or I will eat you.” The woman was terrified and threw some millet from her basket and hurried on.

But the cunning tiger ate all of the food in the basket and the woman. He put on the woman’s clothes and went to the woman’s small house.

The tiger, disguised as the children’s mother, knocked on the door. “Let me in, children. It's only me,” the tiger said sweetly. But the children were suspicious.

“Is it really you, mother? Why is your voice so coarse?” the son asked. “I’ve been talking all day,” the tiger said.

“Can you put your hand through the opening?” the daughter said suspiciously. The tiger put millet powder on his paw.

“You’re not our mother!” the girl cried. “Your hand is covered with fur. You are a tiger!”

The tiger broke the door and the children ran out the back door and climbed a tree next to the well. “How did you get in there?” the tiger demanded, looking at the reflection of the children in the well. The children laughed and said, “We are up here in the tree. If you want to climb up here, pour oil on the tree,” the boy said. “That makes it easy to climb.”

The tiger ran off and found some oil. He covered the tree trunk with the oil, but the tree was now even more slippery. He fell to the ground. “How clever you are! I give up. But just tell me how did you really get so high up the tree?” the tiger said in a flattering way.

“We took the axe,” the boy said proudly. “We chopped holes for our feet in the trunk of the tree,” the girl added.

The cunning tiger laughed and got an ax. The children now realized how foolish they had been and began to pray. The Lord of Heaven heard their prayer and immediately sent down a strong rope with a pail at the bottom. The children quickly sat in the pail and pulled upward.

When the tiger reached the top of the tree, he also prayed. The Lord of Heaven heard the tiger’s prayer, but this time, he sent down a rotten rope with a pail at the bottom. In his hurry, the tiger quickly sat in the pail and pulled upward.

The rotten rope could not carry the tiger’s weight, and it broke. The tiger fell and landed in an old millet field. The tiger’s body was pierced by the sharp millet stalks, and they were covered by his blood. This is why millet is red.

이웃을 도우러 가게 된 엄마는 딸과 아들에게 말했습니다. “엄마가 없는 동안 어떤 낯선 사람이 찾아와도 문을 열어주지 않도록 조심하렴.”

엄마는 이웃을 도와 하루종일 밭에서 일하고 떡을 만들 수수를 한 포대 얻었습니다. 집으로 돌아오는 도중 엄마는 사나운 호랑이를 만났습니다.

“내게 먹을 것을 좀 줘, 그렇지 않으면 널 잡아먹을 테다.” 호랑이가 말했습니다. 엄마는 무서워서 포대에서 수수를 좀 던져놓고 황급히 갔습니다.

그러나 교활한 호랑이는 포대에 있는 수수는 물론, 엄마도 잡아먹었습니다. 호랑이는 엄마의 옷을 입고 엄마의 작은 집으로 갔습니다.

아이들의 엄마로 변장한 호랑이가 문을 두드렸습니다. “문 좀 열어줘, 얘들아. 엄마야.” 호랑이가 상냥하게 말했습니다. 그러나 아이들은 의심스러웠지요.

“정말 엄마 맞아요? 근데 엄마 목소리가 왜 그렇게 거칠어요?” 아들이 물었습니다. “응, 엄마가 하루종일 말을 해서 그렇단다.” 호랑이가 대답했습니다.

“구멍으로 엄마 손 좀 넣을 수 있어요?” 딸이 의심스럽다는 듯 말했습니다. 호랑이 손엔 수수 가루가 묻어 있었습니다. “넌 우리 엄마가 아니야!” 딸은 소리쳤습니다. “네 손은 털로 덮여있잖아. 넌 호랑이야!”

호랑이가 문을 부수자 아이들은 뒷문으로 달려나가 우물 옆에 있는 나무에 올라갔습니다. “너희들 어떻게 거기 들어갔니?” 호랑이가 우물에 비친 아이들을 보며 물었습니다. 아이들은 웃으며 말했습니다. “우리 여기 나무 위에 있다. 너도 여기로 올라오고 싶으면 나무에 기름을 바르렴.” 소년이 말했습니다. “그렇게 하면 올라오는 게 쉬울 거야.”

호랑이는 달려가 기름을 찾아온 후 나무에 발랐습니다. 하지만 나무는 아까보다 훨씬 더 미끄러웠습니다. 호랑이는 땅으로 떨어졌습니다.

“우린 도끼를 가져왔지.” 소년이 자랑스럽게 말했습니다. “발을 디디려고 나무를 찍어 구멍을 냈지.” 소녀가 덧붙였습니다.

교활한 호랑이는 웃더니 도끼를 가져왔습니다. 아이들은 이제야 그들이 얼마나 어리석었는지 깨닫고 기도하기 시작했습니다. 하느님이 그들의 기도를 듣곤 끝에 통이 달린 튼튼한 밧줄을 내려보냈습니다. 아이들이 재빨리 통 안에 앉자 통은 점점 위로 올라갔습니다.

나무 꼭대기에 올라온 호랑이 역시 기도를 했습니다. 하느님은 호랑이의 기도를 들었지만 이번엔 썩은 밧줄에 달린 통을 내려보냈습니다. 호랑이는 급히 통 안에 앉았고 역시 위로 올라갔습니다.

썩은 밧줄은 호랑이의 무게를 이기지 못하고 끊어졌습니다. 호랑이는 밑으로 떨어지다가 오래된 수수밭에 떨어졌습니다. 호랑이의 몸은 날카로운 수숫대에 찔려 피투성이가 됐습니다. 수수가 붉은색이 된 건 그 때문이라고 합니다.

아이들이 하늘에 도착하자, 하느님은 수줍은 소녀를 해가 되게 했습니다. 이후 아무도 그녀를 똑바로 쳐다볼 수 없게 됐습니다. 하느님은 소녀의 이름을 ‘해님’이라고 지었습니다. 또 소년은 달이 되게 하고 ‘달님’이라고 불렀습니다.
