The King of the Sea had been very ill for many months. The royal doctors tried all different kinds of medicine to cure him, but in vain. Then they sent for the Wiseman of the sea.

The Wiseman said the only one medicine to cure him could be found on land. “On land!” the King said with surprise. “We are all sea creatures. How can anybody get this medicine for me?”

“There is one sea creature that can live on land.” said the Wiseman. “Perhaps Turtle could go to the land and get this medicine.”
“I shall ask him.”, the King of the Sea said. “But tell me, what is this medicine?” “It is the minced liver of a hare.”, the Wiseman said.

The King of the Sea sent for Turtle. The King explained what he wanted.
“Very well, Your Majesty.” Turtle said. “I will do my best.” “He lives underground. Find a hole in the ground and wait by it.”

Turtle found a hole and sat by it. When Hare came out of the hole, Turtle jumped quickly on him and flattened him. Hare could hardly breathe with Turtle on top of him. He gasped, “Don’t hurt me, Turtle, I will do whatever you say.”

“Don't be frightened, Hare” Turtle said. “The King of the Sea wants to give you something, so you must come with me.” He didn’t say the truth because he thought Hare might try to run away if he heard the King wanted his liver.

Before long, they reached the Royal Sea Palace. The King of the Sea looked at Hare. We should take out your liver. It is the only medicine that will cure me." “Take out my liver!” Hare exclaimed. He knew that without a liver, he would die.

“Your Majesty”, Hare said. “It would be my honor to give my liver to you, but I left it at home to keep it safe. If you don’t mind, I will go and bring it back here for you.”

So, Hare and Turtle went back to the land. When they reached Hare's hole, Hare put his hand in his hole to feel around and took out three pieces of some small roots. Hare said, “Tell the King to take one piece a day before breakfast. In three days, he will be cured.” Hare lied so he could be set free.

When Turtle arrived at the palace, he presented the King with the three roots. The doctors had never seen dried hare’s liver before, so the King of the Sea took one piece a day before breakfast for three days. On the fourth day, he was cured!

It was actually the pieces of ginseng root that cured him. To this day, many people eat ginseng to help them stay healthy.

바다의 왕, 용왕님이 여러 달 동안 매우 심한 병에 걸렸습니다. 궁중의 의사들이 병을 고쳐 보려고 모든 종류의 약을 써봤지만 헛수고였습니다. 그래서 그들은 바다의 도사를 불러들였습니다.

도사는 용왕님의 병을 고칠 수 있는 오직 한 가지 약이 있는데 육지에서 찾을 수 있는 것이라고 말했습니다. “육지라고!” 용왕님이 놀라서 말했습니다. “우리는 모두 바다에 사는 동물이다. 누가 어떻게 날 위해 이 약을 구해올 수 있단 말인가?”

“육지에 사는 바다 동물이 하나 있습니다,” 하고 도사가 말했습니다. “아마도 거북이가 육지에 가서 이 약을 구해올 수 있을 것입니다.” “그에게 내가 물어봐야겠다.” 용왕님이 말했습니다. “그런데 말해봐라. 도대체 그 약이 뭔가?” “잘게 다진 토끼 간입니다.” 도사가 말했습니다.

용왕님은 거북이를 불러들였습니다. 용왕님은 그가 원하는 걸 설명했습니다. “잘 알겠습니다, 용왕님.” 거북이가 말했습니다. “최선을 다하겠습니다.”

육지에 온 거북이는 토끼가 어디에 사는지 알 수 없었습니다. 그때 새 한 마리가 거북이에게 말했습니다. “토끼는 땅 속에서 산단다. 땅에 있는 구멍을 찾아 그 옆에서 기다려봐.” 거북이는 구멍 하나를 찾아 옆에 앉았습니다.

구멍에서 토끼가 나오자 거북이는 재빨리 그를 향해 뛰어올라 쓰러뜨렸습니다. 토끼는 위에서 누르는 거북이 때문에 숨을 쉴 수가 없었습니다. 토끼가 숨을 헐떡이며 말했습니다. “거북이님, 나를 해치지 마세요, 말씀하시는 건 뭐든지 다 할게요.”

“놀라지 마라, 토끼야.” 거북이가 말했습니다. “용왕님은 네가 뭔가를 주기를 바라신단다. 네가 나와 같이 갔으면 좋겠다.” 만약 용왕님이 그의 간이 필요하다는 말을 들으면 토끼가 도망을 칠 것 같아 거북이는 거짓말을 했습니다.

오래지 않아 그들은 바다 궁전에 도착했습니다. 용왕님은 토끼를 쳐다봤습니다. “우리는 네 간을 꺼내야 한다. 그게 날 낫게 하는 유일한 약이다.” “내 간을 꺼낸다고요!” 토끼가 외쳤습니다. 그는 간이 없으면 죽을 거란 사실을 알고 있었습니다. 토끼가 말했습니다. “용왕님, 제 간을 용왕님께 드리는 건 영광스러운 일입니다. 하지만 지금은 안전하게 보관하기 위해 집에 두고 왔습니다. 괜찮으시다면 용왕님을 위해 간을 갖고 다시 여기로 돌아오겠습니다.”

토끼와 거북이는 다시 육지로 돌아왔습니다. 그들이 토끼 구멍에 도착했을 때 토끼는 한 손을 구멍 안에 넣어 주위를 더듬은 후 작은 뿌리 세 개를 뜯어냈습니다.

토끼가 말했습니다. “용왕님께 하루에 한 번, 아침 식사 전에 이걸 한 개씩 잡수시라고 얘기하세요. 사흘이면 다 나을 겁니다.” 토끼는 거짓말로 위기를 모면할 수 있었습니다.

거북이는 왕궁에 도착해 용왕님께 뿌리 세 개를 보여드렸습니다. 다진 토끼 간을 본 적이 없던 의원들은 그 뿌리를 토끼 간이라고 굳게 믿었습니다. 용왕님은 토끼가 말한 대로 사흘간 아침 식사 전에 뿌리를 한 개씩 먹었습니다. 나흘째 되는 날, 그는 정말로 다 나았습니다! 인삼 뿌리가 그를 낫게 한 겁니다. 그날 이후 오늘날까지 많은 사람이 건강을 유지하기 위해 인삼을 먹습니다.
