Once upon a time, there were two brothers named Hungboo and Nolboo. The younger brother, Hungboo, was virtuous and the older brother, Nolboo, was unkind.

One day their father called them up, "If I die, divided the property in half and you each get a half." But after their father died the bad Nolboo kicked Hungboo, his wife and his nine children out.

"Mom, I am hungry" "Mom, me too." The Nine children were crying. They got the flu and starved. "I will get some rice from your uncle's house, tomorrow. Let's bear hunger for one more day."

Next morning, Hungboo went to his brother's house. "Brother, my children have nothing to eat. Please spare me some rice." At that moment Nolboo's wife was scooping rice out of a pot. She came out and hit his cheek with the rice scoop. "Sister-in-law, this side too." "What?" Hungboo got flogged and came back home empty handed.

The cold winter went by and the warm spring came. A pair of swallow made their home at Hungboo's house and bred baby swallows. One day, Hungboo heard a loud cry of swallows. He ran to see what was going on and the big snake was sticking out its tongue to eat baby swallows.

Hungboo hit the snake with the stick and it away. But a baby swallow fell when it was trying to avoid the snake and broke its leg. Hungboo put a bandage on its leg. The autumn came and the swallow family was headed for the South. "Thank you. I will return you a favor."

Next year, spring came. Each swallow came back with a gourd seed in its mouth. Gourd seed grew successfully. "Let's open up a gourd and have a nice meal." Hungboo's family who was sawing the gourd watched in astonishment. The valuable treasures poured out from the gourd. "Ho! Ho! Let's open up the other one." When he sawed the other gourd, the house, rice, silk, and jewel fell out.

Nolboo heard the news and went to Hungboo's house. Hungboo told his brother the whole story and Nolboo went back home without even saying "Thank you."

"Honey, catch a swallow quickly!" Nolboo caught a swallow, broke its leg and applied a bandage. "Bring me a lot of gourd seed." Next year, the swallow delivered him gourd seed.

Nolboo planted it and he quickly opened the gourd. The gourd exploded 'Pop' the Nolboo's family was surprised. There were ghosts, demons, snakes, etc and they knocked Nolboo's family down. "Ouch! Oh, I am dying."

They took away everything what Nolboo had and he became a beggar. When Hungboo heard the news he came to see his brother Nolboo and said "Brother, Let's live together. We are brothers." After that day, Nolboo became a good man and lived a blissful life.

<흥부와 놀부>

옛날 옛날에 흥부와 놀부 형제가 살았어요. 동생 흥부는 마음씨가 착했지만 형 놀부는 심술이 사나웠어요. 하루는 아버지가 두 형제를 부른 후 말했어요. “내가 죽거든 재산을 똑같이 둘이 나눠 가져라.” 하지만 아버지가 돌아가신 후 못된 형 놀부는 흥부와 흥부 부인, 그리고 아홉 명의 자식을 내쫓았어요.

“엄마, 배고파.” “엄마, 나도요.” 아이들이 추위와 배고픔에 떨며 울었어요. “조금만 기다려라. 날 새면 큰아버지 댁에 가서 쌀 좀 얻어 오마.” 흥부는 놀부의 집에 찾아갔어요. “형님, 아이들이 배고프다고 울고 있어요. 쌀 조금만 주세요.” 그때 밥을 푸던 놀부 마누라가 갖고 있던 주걱으로 뺨을 때렸어요. “에잇!” 뺨에 주걱에 묻은 쌀이 묻자, “형수님, 이쪽 뺨도.” “뭐라, 요놈아!” 흥부는 매만 실컷 맞고 돌아왔어요.

배고프고 추운 겨울이 가고 따스한 봄날이 됐어요. 제비 부부 두 마리가 흥부네 집에 집을 짓고 아기 제비를 낳았어요. 그러던 어느 날 요란스러운 울음소리에 제비집을 살펴보니 커다란 구렁이 한 마리가 아기 제비를 잡아먹으려고 혀를 날름거렸어요. 흥부는 몽둥이로 구렁이를 때려 쫓아버렸어요. 그러나 아기 제비 한 마리는 구렁이를 피하려다 떨어져 다리가 부러졌어요. 흥부는 제비 다리를 붕대로 감아줬어요. 어느덧 가을이 와 제비 가족이 강남으로 떠나게 됐어요. “고마워요, 흥부님. 꼭 은혜를 갚을게요.”

다음해 봄이 되자 예전의 제비들이 박씨 하나를 물어다줬어요. 박씨는 무럭무럭 탐스럽게 자랐어요. “얘들아, 오늘은 박을 타서 배불리 먹자꾸나.” 박을 타던 흥부의 식구들은 깜짝 놀랐어요. 박에서 많은 보물이 쏟아져 나왔거든요. “허허! 다른 박을 타봅시다.” 다른 박을 타니 집·쌀·비단·보석 등이 계속해서 나왔어요.

이 소식을 들은 놀부는 흥부의 집에 찾아갔어요. 모든 일을 설명해주자 놀부는 고맙다는 말도 없이 그냥 집으로 갔어요. “여보! 빨리 제비 한 마리 잡아와.” 놀부는 제비를 잡아 억지로 다리를 부러뜨리고 붕대를 감아줬어요. “이놈, 제비들아! 박씨 많이 물고 오너라.” 다음해 제비들은 박씨를 물어다줬어요.

놀부는 박씨를 심고 박이 열리자마자 박을 타기 시작했어요. ‘펑’ 하고 박이 터지자 놀부의 식구들은 깜짝 놀랐어요. 박에서 귀신·도깨비·뱀들이 나타나 놀부 부부를 마구 때려줬거든요. “아이고! 아이고! 놀부 살려.”

놀부는 망하고 거지가 됐어요. 이 소식을 들은 흥부는 놀부를 찾아와 “형님, 저희와 함께 살아요. 우리는 형제가 아닙니까.” 그 후 놀부는 착한 사람이 돼 행복하게 살았어요.
