Once upon a time in a village, there lived a little girl and her mother. The mother had been sick in bed for a long time because of an unknown disease. The girl was very worried about her mother. She found it very difficult indeed to support both her ailing mother and herself.

She said, “Ah, it is difficult. But I am going to cure my mother by all means. I am able to endure this hardship until my mother is cured.” One day, her mother told her a story of her dream. “My dear girl, I saw a mountain god in my dream. He said I may be cured if I take a carp.”

“Really, mother?” “What if it is real? Where can we obtain a carp in this cold winter?” “But who knows? We might be able to find one somewhere.” Her mother sighed deeply.

On the next day, the girl went out in order to find a carp. ‘There must be a carp somewhere. I am determined to find one by searching the pond carefully.’ The entire mountain was covered with snow. Just then, a dog that had been wandering about the valley appeared in front of the girl.

The girl patted the dog saying, “You are a pretty dog. Why do you wander about alone? Don’t you have a home? ” The dog walked ahead of her as if he wanted her to follow him. After trailing after the dog for a while, there appeared to her a wide pond. The pond was frozen hard.

‘We should first make a hole.’ A round hole was finally carved out after the girl had dug at the ice for some time. All of a sudden, the dog ran into the hole. After a moment, the dog came out with a carp in its mouth as big as a man’s forearm. “It is great! It is unbelievable that you caught a carp for me. Thank you, my dog.”

The girl came down the mountain carefully with the carp put into a basket. The god followed her until she reached her house, at which time the god disappeared like a puff of smoke and an old man appeared instead.

“Who are you?” “My dear girl, I am the mountain god. I give this carp to you as a gift since your filial piety is respectable. You may take this to your mother soon. Then your mother will be cured.” The mountain god finished talking and disappeared without leaving a trace.

The girl then realized that, “Ah! That dog was the mountain god in disguise. Dear God, thank you.”

The girl cooked the carp and gave it to her mother. Her mother ate the fish and was cured in one day.

<효녀를 도운 개>

옛날 어느 마을에 어머니와 단둘이 사는 어린 소녀가 있었어요. 어머니는 원인 모를 병으로 오랫동안 앓고 계셨어요. 소녀는 어머니를 무척 걱정했어요. 소녀와 소녀의 아픈 어머니를 위해 생계를 꾸리던 소녀는 너무 힘이 들었어요.

소녀는 말했어요. “아, 힘들다. 하지만 어머니의 병을 꼭 낫게 해 드릴 거야. 어머니가 다 나을 때까지 이 정도의 고생은 참을 수 있어.” 그러던 어느 날이었어요. 어머니가 소녀에게 꿈 얘기를 해줬어요. “얘야, 꿈에 신령님이 나타나셨단다. 잉어를 먹으면 병이 낫는다고 하더라.”

“그게 정말이에요. 어머니?” “정말이면 뭐 하냐? 이 추운 겨울에 어디서 잉어를 구하겠니?” “그래도 혹시 알아요? 어딘가에 있을지.” 어머니는 깊은 한숨을 쉬었어요.

다음날이 되었어요. 소녀는 잉어를 구하려고 집을 나섰어요. “어딘가에 분명히 잉어가 있을 거야. 연못을 샅샅이 뒤져서라도 잉어를 구하고 말 거야.” 산은 온통 눈으로 뒤덮여 있었어요. 산골짜기를 헤매고 있던 소녀 앞에 개 한 마리가 나타났어요.

소녀는 개를 쓰다듬어주며 말했어요. “예쁜 개구나. 왜 혼자 돌아다니니? 집이 없니?” 개는 따라오라는 듯 앞장서서 걸어갔어요. 소녀가 개를 따라가니 넓은 연못이 나타났어요. 연못은 꽁꽁 얼어붙어 있었어요.

‘우선 구멍을 만들어야겠어.’ 소녀가 한참 동안 얼음을 파자, 동그란 구멍이 생겼어요. 그런데 갑자기 개가 구멍 속으로 뛰어들어가는 게 아니겠어요? 잠시 후 개는 팔뚝만 한 잉어를 입에 물고 나왔어요. “어머! 네가 잉어를 잡아오다니. 고맙다. 개야.”

소녀는 잉어를 바구니에 넣고 조심조심 산을 내려왔어요. 개는 소녀의 집 근처까지 따라왔어요. 집 앞에 다다르자 개는 연기처럼 사라지고, 대신 한 노인이 나타났어요.

“누구세요?” “얘야, 난 산신령이란다. 네 효심이 지극해서 선물로 주는 것이니 이 잉어를 얼른 어머니께 드려라. 그러면 어머니의 병이 나을 것이다.” 말을 마친 산신령은 흔적도 없이 사라졌어요.

소녀는 그제야 눈치 챘어요. “아! 아까 그 개는 산신령이 변한 거구나. 산신령님, 감사합니다.” 소녀는 잉어를 정성껏 고아 어머니께 드렸어요. 잉어를 먹은 어머니는 하루 만에 병이 다 나았답니다.
