There was a widow mother frog who struggled to raise her naughty son alone. She called him Blue Frog. He always thought of a way to trick others and have fun. He had gotten into all kinds of trouble. Blue Frog wasn’t only naughty. He was also rude and disobedient. He would always act in a way that was contrary to, or the opposite of, what his mother asked.

One day, his mother told him to catch some tasty insects for their supper. Blue Frog didn’t want to work hard catching them. Instead he picked up some dead insects and brought them to his mother.

His mother took the insects and looked at them. They had been dead a long time. She was so upset and said, "When will you do as you are told?” Blue Frog didn't care about his mother. He thought only of himself.  "You can't tell me what to do," he said rudely to her.

Mother Frog worried about her son and became ill. She couldn't eat or sleep for months and eventually became very thin. But Blue Frog was so busy with his own affairs that he didn't even notice that his mother was ill.

His mother knew she would die soon and Blue Frog was the only one who could bury her. Her only wish was to be buried peacefully on the mountain. She didn’t want to be washed away by the water from the river.  She knew Blue Frog would do the opposite of what he was asked.

She had an idea and called her son one day and said, "I am dying, my son. When I die, bury me by the river. Don't bury me on the mountain. "Of course, Mother," Blue Frog said without thinking. Then he just went out to play with his friend.

When Blue Frog returned home later that evening, he found his mother dead. Blue Frog began to have regrets. He felt so guilty. He remembered how his mother had cared for him. And he thought about all of his bad behavior.

"I must keep her last wish to make up with her," he thought. Then he buried his mother by the river, even though he knew it was not a proper place for a grave.

Not long after Blue Frog buried his mother, it began to rain. Blue Frog quickly hopped down to the river to his mother's grave and cried. He worried the river might rise too high and flood his mother's grave. From that time on, frogs always croak when it rains. And people who are contrary are often called Blue Frog.

<청개구리>

옛날 옛날에 버릇없는 아들 개구리를 남편 없이 홀로 키우는 엄마 개구리가 있었습니다. 엄마 개구리는 아들을 ‘청개구리’라고 불렀습니다. 아들 청개구리는 항상 다른 이들에게 장난칠 궁리만 했습니다. 그래서 늘 말썽을 일으켰습니다. 아들 청개구리는 버릇만 없는 게 아니라, 엄마 개구리의 말도 안 들었습니다. 언제나 엄마 개구리가 하는 말과는 반대로 행동했습니다.

하루는 엄마 개구리가 아들 개구리에게 저녁으로 먹을 맛있는 벌레를 잡아오라고 말했습니다. 아들 개구리는 벌레를 잡기 싫어 죽은 벌레를 주워 갖고 왔습니다.

엄마 개구리가 아들이 가져온 벌레를 보니, 이미 오래전에 죽은 벌레였습니다. 엄마 개구리는 속상해서 “언제쯤 시키는 대로 할 거니?”라고 말했습니다. 아들 청개구리는 엄마가 뭐라고 하든 신경 쓰지 않고 단지 자기 자신만을 생각했습니다. “저한테 이래라저래라 하지 말아요.” 엄마 개구리에게 버릇없이 말했습니다.

엄마 개구리는 아들 청개구리 걱정으로 병에 걸렸습니다. 여러 달 동안 먹지도 자지도 못해서 결국에는 무척 여위었습니다. 그렇지만 아들 청개구리는 자기 일에만 바쁜 나머지 엄마 개구리가 병든 것도 몰랐습니다.

엄마 개구리는 자신이 얼마 안 있어 죽을 것이며 자신을 묻어줄 개구리는 아들 청개구리뿐이라는 것을 알았습니다. 개울물에 쓸려 내려가지 않고, 산에 평화롭게 묻히는 것이 엄마 개구리의 단 하나의 소원이었습니다. 아들 청개구리가 엄마 말과 반대로 한다는 걸 생각하고서 하루는 아들 청개구리를 불렀습니다.

“아들아, 엄마는 죽어 간단다. 내가 죽으면 개울가에 묻어 주렴, 산에 묻지 말고 말이다.” “네, 엄마.” 라며 아들 청개구리는 아무 생각 없이 대답하고는 나가서 친구랑 놀았습니다.

그날 저녁 아들 청개구리가 집에 돌아왔을 때, 엄마 개구리가 죽은 것을 발견했습니다. 아들 청개구리는 후회하기 시작했고, 잘못했다고 느꼈습니다. 엄마 개구리가 얼마나 잘 자신을 돌보아 주었는지, 자신이 얼마나 못되게 굴었는지도 생각했습니다.

“이번만큼은 엄마의 마지막 소원을 들어 드려야겠어.”라며 엄마 개구리를 개울가에 묻었습니다. 물론 개울가가 무덤을 쓰기에 좋은 곳이 아니라는 걸 알면서도 그렇게 했습니다.

엄마 개구리를 묻고 얼마 되지 않아 비가 내리기 시작했습니다. 아들 청개구리는 엄마 무덤으로 빨리 뛰어가서 울었습니다. 개울물이 불어서 엄마 무덤이 쓸려 내려갈까 봐 걱정했습니다. 이때부터 개구리는 비가 내리면 항상 울어대고, 사람들은 반대로 행동하는 사람을 ‘청개구리’라고 부르게 됐습니다.
